It’s Just A Short Beta So Don’t Give Up All Hope
Owlcat Games may have become their own worst enemy thanks to the stellar job they did with Rogue Trader and Baldur’s Gate 3. Those games were very well done and have raised everyone’s expectations to a level that is hard to maintain. Case and point is the closed beta demo of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, which Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN tried out. It’s not an isometric game, instead resembling Mass Effect’s over the shoulder third person perspective. That’s not the only way it resembles that series, it also has the same primary and secondary weapon interface as well as similar ‘tech magic’ powers you can develop.
The problem lies in the characters, which RPS were not overly impressed by, not to mention the pre-built protagonist character you play as. It is still early days and things might improve, not to mention the benefit of being able to create the character you want in the full game. The graphics did impress RPS, apart from some creepiness in the dialogue animations; something we are used to thanks to Bethesda. The artificial gravity is apparently also well executed, and you will find yourself on the occasional space walk.
Here’s hoping the feedback from players of the Osiris Reborn beta leads to an improved experience at launch.
