The next shot at a live-action Resident Evil movie is coming this year courtesy of Weapons and Barbarian director Zach Cregger, and true to his word, it doesn’t seem like an adaptation of the games at all. The first trailer has zombies and other creepy crawlies galore, but you won’t see Leon Kennedy or Chris Redfield here.
Resident Evil follows a guy named Bryan, played by Euphoria and Weapons actor Austin Abrams, who is having a no good, very bad night. We don’t know much about the guy beyond that he is a medical courier and that he has a partner he is worried he won’t see again after the world starts to go to shit around him. Despite it not being a direct adaptation of any of the Resident Evil games, we do see Bryan doing very Resident Evil things like using minimal supplies to try to fend off a horde of zombies and looting keys off of a dead body.
Resident Evil is coming to theaters on September 18, just about a month before the Street Fighter live-action reboot also heads to the big screen on October 16. If both movies are any good, Capcom’s set up to dominate both the video game and movie theater this year after putting out bangers like Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem. Now if only it could erase that weird incest story in Street Fighter 6 from the collective consciousness.
