Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduced just under 50 new Mega Evolutions across the RPG’s base game and the Mega Dimension DLC. Like Legends: Arceus before it, Z-A doesn’t include Abilities, or passive perks each Pokémon has that help it in battle and open up strategic possibilities. However, Pokémon Champions, the Switch/mobile battle simulator that is supposed to Pokémon’s new competitive platform moving forward, is out on Switch now and is bringing each of these superpowered transformations to the competitive scene in waves. As such, each of them are finally getting Abilities, and the second wave came during the new season following the mobile launch on June 17. Let’s run down the ones we know so far, with additions courtesy of Serebii.
Mega Dragonite – Multiscale
Mega Dragonite is taking its base form’s hidden ability Multiscale. This reduces incoming damage when Dragonite is at full HP, giving it a bit more survivability when it’s first sent out into battle.
Mega Meganium – Mega Sol
Mega Meganinum is getting a brand new ability in Mega Sol, which allows it to attack and receive the perks of the harsh sunlight weather mechanic. This means it can use moves like Solar Beam without having to charge up for one turn and without also suffering from the drawbacks of sunlight like the increased damage from fire-type attacks.
Mega Feraligatr – Dragonize
Mega Feraligator is also getting its own ability with Dragonize, which turns all normal-type attacks into dragon-type moves and gives them a 20-percent power boost. Feraligatr turns into a water/dragon-type monster when it mega evolves which means it’s already getting an attack boost when it uses dragon-type attacks, so using powerful normal-type attacks has a ton of damage potential with all these boosts.
Mega Froslass – Snow Warning
Froslass can summon a snowstorm upon Mega Evolution thanks to Snow Warning, which isn’t a new ability, but it is new to the Froslass evolution line. This changes the weather on the battlefield for five turns, which increases the defense of ice-type Pokémon.
Mega Emboar – Mold Breaker
Unlike the other two Legends Z-A starters, Mega Emboar doesn’t get its own ability, but it still gets a decent one. Mold Breaker bypasses enemy abilities that might cause an attack to miss or be nullified.
Mega Chesnaught – Bulletproof
Mega Chesnaught takes its evolutionary line’s Hidden Ability Bulletproof and makes it the primary one. This nullifies “ball and bomb moves,” which is a bit situational, but can keep it safe from some heavy hitters like Aura Sphere and Beak Blast.
Mega Delphox – Levitate
This one’s not too surprising, as Delphox now flies on a witch’s broom when it Mega Evolves. Now it’s immune to ground-type attacks, which is good because that takes one of its weaknesses off the board as a fire-type Pokémon.
Mega Greninja – Protean
Mega Greninja’s ability Protean changes its base type to that of whatever attack it just used. This means it can open itself up to different weaknesses temporarily, but if you plan your moves right, you can likely nullify incoming attacks that might do a ton of damage.
Mega Clefable – Magic Bounce
Mega Clefable gets Magic Bounce, a powerful ability that reflects status moves back onto the user instead of experiencing any of the negative effects itself.
Mega Victreebel – Innards Out
Innards Out basically gives Mega Victreebel’s enemies a parting gift, as they will take damage equivalent to Victreebel’s remaining HP after defeating it. If you knock this thing out in one powerful fire attack, you might both be headed to the Pokémon Center.
Mega Starmie – Huge Power
Mega Starmie, ever the imposing beast, gets Huge Power, which doubles its attack stat.
Mega Skarmory – Stalwart
Stalwart allows Mega Skarmory to ignore moves and abilities that redirect its attacks, such as Follow Me or Lightning Rod.
Mega Chimecho – Levitate
Mega Chimecho follows its regular form with Levitate, allowing it to avoid ground-type moves.
Mega Excadrill – Piercing Drill
Piercing Drill is a new signature ability for Mega Excadrill, which allows its contact moves to pierce through defensive abilities like Protect for 1/4 damage.
Mega Chandelure – Infiltrator
Mega Chandelure is able to bypass barrier abilities like Reflect and Light Screen.
Mega Golurk – Unseen Fist
Mega Golurk’s contact moves deal damage, even when the opponent uses a defensive move like Protect.
Mega Floette – Fairy Aura
Mega Floette gets Xerneas’ Fairy Aura ability, which powers up its fairy-type attacks.
Mega Meowstic – Trace
Mega Meowstic has Trace, which lets it copy its opponent’s ability.
Mega Hawlucha – No Guard
No Guard makes it so that no attacks used by or against Hawlucha can miss. So mind your match-ups.
Mega Crabominable – Iron Fist
Mega Crabominable’s punch moves are powered up.
Mega Drampa – Berserk
Berserk boosts Mega Drampa’s special attack when struck by an attack that halves its HP.
Mega Scovillain – Spicy Spray
Thanks to this ability, any Pokémon that attacks Mega Scovillain is inflicted with a burn status.
Mega Glimmora – Adaptability
Mega Glimorra’s Adaptability powers up moves of its typing, meaning it gets a damage bonus for rock and poison attacks.
Mega Raichu X – Electric Surge
Mega Raichu X lays down Electric Terrain upon transformation, powering up electric moves and preventing any grounded monsters from being put to sleep.
Mega Raichu Y – No Guard
Mega Raichu Y has the same ability as Mega Hawlucha, causing all attacks from and targeting this Pokémon to land, regardless of their typical accuracy.
Mega Staraptor – Contrary
Contrary reverses all stat changes afflicted on this Mega Staraptor, meaning that debuffs become buffs, and buffs become debuffs.
Mega Scolipede – Shell Armor
Mega Scolipede has Shell Armor, which prevents it from taking any critical hits.
Mega Scrafty – Intimidate
Mega Scrafty’s ability lowers the attack stat of opposing Pokémon when it transforms or is swapped in.
Mega Eelektross – Eelevate
Eelevate is a new riff on the usual Levitate ability Eelektross has before it Mega Evolves. Like Levitate, it is immune to ground-type attacks and other ground-based hazards, but also, when it knocks out a Pokémon, it will gain a boost to its highest stat.
Mega Pyroar – Fire Mane
Fire Mane boosts Mega Pyroar’s fire-type attacks by 50 percent.
Mega Malamar – Contrary
Like Mega Staraptor, Mega Malamor can reverse stat changes.
Mega Barbaracle – Tough Claws
Tough Claws powers up moves in which Mega Barbaracle makes direct contact with an enemy.
Mega Dragalge – Regenerator
Mega Dragalge recovers HP when withdrawn from battle.
Mega Falinks – Defiant
If any of Mega Falinks’ stats are lowered, it will receive a boost to its attack stat.
