Xbox and Sega presented a broadcast on Wednesday that shared new details about their upcoming Yakuza prequel, Stranger than Heaven. Since the broadcast aired, RGG Studio has come under fire for its bizarre choice to use the likeness of famous film actor Bunta Sugawara, who passed away in 2014. In a press release for the upcoming game, Sega shared the following statement: “In STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, the late and legendary actor Bunta Sugawara appears. SEGA received formal consent from his family, and, with materials provided by Toei Company, Ltd.—which produced many of Mr. Sugawara’s films, including the Battles Without Honor…
If you use Google’s Chrome browser for desktop, there’s probably a Gemini Nano AI model running on your computer right now and taking up about 4 GB of space. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but if you didn’t know about it and don’t want it, there’s a way to turn it off.The file started auto-downloading for Chrome users in 2024 after Google built Gemini Nano into the browser. But a report by That Privacy Guy this week and the ensuing reception it received highlighted how unaware many users were—perhaps a result of a flood of AI services and features…
Halo Infinite is still getting new content. Wizardry was purchased by Atari, but only some of it. World War 2 strategy nerds rejoice as Ruse comes back to Steam. It’s Kotaku‘s Checkpoint news roundup for May 7, 2026, where some of us have regressed to our old high school ways and refuse to fill our car’s gas tank more than three gallons at a time. Unfortunately, every time I return to the pump, the price is somehow even higher than before. At least the criminally underrated Hell Is Us is coming to Switch 2. PC gamer gets roasted for not…
Cruises are so closely associated with illness that the highly contagious norovirus is commonly called the “cruise ship virus.”But a ship headed for Spain’s Canary Islands has attracted global attention due to a rare outbreak of hantavirus that’s left three dead. While alarming, health officials and infectious disease experts say the risk to the general public right now is low because hantavirus is less contagious than other respiratory diseases like the coronavirus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.“This is not Covid, this is not influenza. It spreads very, very differently,” Maria Van Kerkhove, director of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention…
The California-based reggae band Stick Figure has been around for 20 years, eight albums, and countless hours on the road, but lead vocalist and guitarist Scott Woodruff has never seen a track take off like “Angels Above Me” did this past week. The seven-year-old song hit number one on the iTunes sales charts in six different countries, including the United Kingdom, Austria, and Canada, skyrocketing “out of nowhere,” according to Woodruff.Stick Figure has had plenty of thrilling milestones before, with albums repeatedly hitting number one in the reggae category, and hit singles amassing hundreds of millions of streams. But the speed…
The Steam Controller launched earlier this week, and within about 30 minutes or so, it had sold out, leading to a lot of disappointed gamers and plenty of greedy online resellers. Now, Valve is promising more stock is coming, and new rules are being activated to try to ensure people who want the new controller can actually buy one in the near future. The May 4 launch of Valve’s new Steam Controller, which at one point was almost named the Steam Controller 2, was a bit of a trainwreck. Like with nearly every new piece of sought-after tech released these…
One of the earliest members of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is in the process of pivoting into his second act as a defense tech startup founder. Ethan Shaotran, one of the young engineers who formed the core of the group’s early strike force, is the founder of a new startup called Blitz Industries. The company’s website provides no information, but in an email viewed by WIRED, Shaotran describes Blitz as a “a defense company backed by big names.”While at DOGE, Shaotran was part of the team that created a makeshift headquarters in the General Services Administration’s (GSA)…
For the third month in a row, Slay the Spire 2 is getting review-bombed on Steam. But what, I hear you ask, is the reason for it this time? Is there a new balance patch? Did they buff Doormaker again or something? No, unfortunately, the reason for most of today’s 2,525 (and counting) negative reviews is somehow much, much dumber; online chuds are mad that media critic and Feminist Frequency founder Anita Sarkeesian is listed in Slay the Spire 2’s credits as a “Consultant.” Back in 2012, Sarkeesian raised just under $160,000 through a Kickstarter campaign to fund a YouTube…
Are you even online in 2026 if you haven’t experienced the verbal tics of ChatGPT? It loves goblins, em dashes, and “it’s not A; it’s B” sentence constructions. But what you might not know is that the chatbot also has plenty of strange phrases it loves to say in Chinese, and they are driving Chinese users crazy.ChatGPT does a decent job answering questions in Chinese, which is why it’s widely used in China despite being blocked by the government. But when users make a request, be it a math problem or an image-generation prompt, the chatbot loves to answer: 我会稳稳地接住你,…
Mortal Kombat is a fighting game in which players compete for the honor of decapitating their opponent in the most cartoonishly gruesome way possible. Adapting that gimmick into a live-action movie requires a delicate balancing act of taking the whole thing extremely seriously while also embracing the absurdity of it all. Critics are split on whether Mortal Kombat II succeeds at this thankless task. Some are calling it a decently fun time watching weirdos beat the crap out of each other. Meanwhile, at least one review accused it of being a sequel that “combines direct-to-video schlock with blockbuster boredom.” Out…
