Anthropic completely shut off access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models Friday night, just days after they were launched. The move comes after Anthropic’s receipt of a US Commerce Department directive Friday evening, subjecting the new models to export controls restricting their use anywhere outside the United States. In a message posted Friday night, Anthropic said the only way for it to ensure compliance with that government order in the immediate term “is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers.” Access to other Anthropic models is not affected. Microsoft’s potential options for the future of the Xbox brand reportedly include spinning it off into a separate company or operating as a “wholly owned subsidiary” rather than a division within Microsoft. According to The Information (via Reuters), these are just a few of the options Microsoft is considering. Xbox has struggled mightily in recent years, most recently losing millions of subscribers to its Game Pass subscription service after a major price hike. Game Pass has, at least partially, seen improvement following a price cut that also removed new Call of Duty games from the library. A spin-off would, on…

The original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time occupies a similar space in my heart as The Black Cauldron, The Last Unicorn, The Neverending Story, The Dark Crystal, and all of the other fantastical experiences of the ’80s and ’90s in that, while fundamental to creating who I am today, they were also extremely dark. Though Majora’s Mask is (understandably) referred to as the darkest Legend of Zelda game, it’s crucial to remember that Ocarina of Time had its fair share of creepy content, too. Part of this is due to the game’s themes and subtle focus on mortality, but…

In March, two Democrats and two Republicans opposed to the law’s broad spying authority introduced a bill to limit the government’s ability to obtain Americans’ private communications without a warrant. This week, lawmakers failed to pass even a short-term extension of FISA amid disputes over proposed surveillance reforms and President Trump choosing Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence. Pulte has no experience in national security; he previously led the Federal Housing Finance Agency and used the post to accuse Trump critics of mortgage fraud. While some Republicans have sought reforms of FISA, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.)…

The budget smartphone market may be heading in an unexpected (or expected?) direction this year. According to a recent post from a reliable industry insider, several sub-brands of major smartphone makers are preparing to launch new devices in the sub-1,000 yuan (around $140) segment. The surprising part is that many of these phones will scale back hardware instead of improving it. Samsung never retired the waterdrop notch in the Galaxy A0X series. In Image: Galaxy A07 5G The report claims that the upcoming budget phones will continue to use 1080p LCD panels and bring back the waterdrop notch. The entry-level…
