OpenAI is asking third-party contractors to upload real assignments and tasks from their current or previous workplaces so that it can use the data to evaluate the performance of its next-generation AI models, according to records from OpenAI and the training data company Handshake AI obtained by WIRED.The project appears to be part of OpenAI’s efforts to establish a human baseline for different tasks that can then be compared with AI models. In September, the company launched a new evaluation process to measure the performance of its AI models against human professionals across a variety of industries. OpenAI says this…

The social media giant is partnering with power companies Vistra, TerraPower and Oklo to deliver an expected 6.6 gigawatts of generation to its projects by 2035.The company’s agreement with TerraPower will fund the development of two new reactors capable of delivering up to 690 megawatts of power as early as 2032. As PC components like RAM continue to be gobbled up by AI hyperscalers, leading to higher prices and limited supplies, a large electronics store in Japan is running out of computers and parts and is asking its customers to please sell them some old PCs. It has become more expensive to build or upgrade a PC over the last few months. A big reason for that is AI-focused tech companies gobbling up PC parts to build massive data centers. It’s becoming quite pricey and challenging for your average person to buy PC RAM and graphics cards, as companies like Micron stop selling…
As NASA moves closer to launch of the Artemis II test flight, the agency soon will roll its SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft to the launch pad for the first time at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to begin final integration, testing, and launch rehearsals. NASA is targeting no earlier than Saturday, Jan. 17, to begin the multi-hour trek from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B. The four-mile journey on the crawler-transporter-2 will take up to 12 hours. Teams are working around the clock to close out all tasks ahead of rollout. However,…
Dell’s XPS 14 now costs over $2,000. An AMD executive predicts that PC builders will likely make piecemeal upgrades this year, instead of building entirely new systems. And new AI supercomputers from NVIDIA and AMD are gobbling up the RAM market. At CES 2026, it was hard not to notice the dire year ahead for the computing industry, one that will likely lead to higher prices and more limited availability for consumer goods across the board.Really, though, the show just confirmed what was apparent since RAM prices skyrocketed over the last few months, driven by demand from AI datacenters. As…
The disease usually develops seven to 14 days after an exposure, but it can take up to 21 days (which is the length of quarantine). Once it develops, it’s marked by a high fever and a telltale rash that starts on the head and spreads downward. People are contagious for four days before the rash develops and four days after it appears. Complications can range from ear infections and diarrhea to encephalitis (swelling of the brain), pneumonia, death in up to 3 out of 1,000 children, and, in very rare cases, a fatal neurological condition that can develop seven to…
The sale of Polygon to a Canadian pornographer last year might have felt to some at the popular gaming website like being NPCs in a Hitman level. A cloak-and-dagger procession of NDAs clued in some of the staff to an ominous change in ownership coming in the days ahead, but no one knew who else knew, or the full details of what the sale would entail. “I didn’t know how many people were under NDA,” Polygon‘s former deputy editor Maddy Myers recently told me (full disclosure: Myers was also previously the deputy editor of Kotaku). “I didn’t know who knew…

The discovery of a never-before-seen bump on the leg bone of a 7 million-year-old fossil ape shows it walked upright on two legs while it was on the ground, a new study finds.Only members of the human lineage have this lump, called the femoral tubercle. That makes the species, Sahelanthropus tchadensis, the earliest known hominin, according to the study, published Jan. 2 in the journal Science Advances. (Hominins are the group of species, including humans, that existed after the split from chimpanzees and bonobos. Walking upright on two legs is a defining characteristic of hominins.)”That [bump] really sold it to…
