55 hours into The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, Too Kyo Games’ visual novel turn-based strategy game, I encountered a particularly touching scene. Two characters, who a few days earlier learned something particularly shocking–one of several moments in the game that recontextualizes the whole experience–get up early and end up watching the sun rise together. It’s a little moment of tranquility, of two people bonding over natural beauty amid a particularly rough string of days, and it landed beautifully. It felt like the game was tapping into something a little deeper, a little more melancholic, than what I’d seen before.According…

Whether a game is amazing, terrible, or somewhere in between, as long as it has One Cool Thing, it’s worth talking about.
One of the closest living relatives of the dodo has been spotted multiple times in Samoa — raising hopes that this critically endangered creature can be saved from the brink of extinction. The Samoa Conservation Society’s (SCS) latest field survey, which took place from Oct. 17-Nov. 13, reported five sightings of the manumea (Didunculus strigirostris). Previous surveys only yielded a single sighting, if any. The last photograph of the cryptic species in the wild was taken in 2013.In the early 1990s, there were around 7,000 of these dodo-like birds, which are only found in Samoa. But habitat destruction, hunting and invasive…
Skate StoryAvailable on PC, PS5, Switch 2To paraphrase Fatboy Slim, the best time for skateboarding games is right here, right now. Between the Tony Hawk Pro 3 + 4 remasters, Skate kickflipping back to life, and a few older games like Session: Skate Sim, I’ve felt spoiled for choice with everything on offer. But among them, Skate Story emerged as a gem of originality, style, and authenticity. While the performance on console has been mixed–at the time of writing, I’m currently grabbing a new patch for it on my PS5–there’s an underdog charm to Skate Story that makes it an instant…
Gamers can be hard to shop for. Even if you know the type of games they usually play, there’s no guarantee they’ll like a specific title. But I have no qualms in recommending Astro Bot to anyone on your list who has a PS5. I don’t have a ton of time to play games, so I’m careful about which ones I pick (mostly I just play whatever Engadget reviews) so when Jess called Astro Bot “one of the best games Sony has ever made” I figured it was a safe bet. That was an underestimation on my part. It’s a…

Setting up a PS5 for a child means you can offer an age-appropriate and safe platform for them to play. Sony made its parental control tools more comprehensive in recent years and they allow families to manage screen time, block unsuitable content, guide online interactions and approve purchases. The process is straightforward once the right menus are in view, but it helps to understand how each feature works before handing over the controller. The system uses individual accounts for each family member, and these accounts determine what a child can access. A parent or guardian assigns restrictions to the child’s profile…
An unusual email arrived in the inbox of a faculty member at the department of archeology at Simon Fraser University in the spring of 2024.This email was from a thrift shop, Thrifty Boutique in Chilliwack, B.C. — unlike the many queries archeologists receive every year to authenticate objects that people have in their possession. The shop wanted to determine whether items donated to the store (and initially put up for sale) were, in fact, ancient artifacts with historical significance. Shop employees relayed that a customer, who did not leave their name, stated the 11 rings and two medallions (though one may…
