Yelling a properly timed swear word isn’t only emotionally satisfying—it may have real physical and psychological benefits. In fact, a well-voiced expletive might even help take you to the next level during a particularly strenuous workout. “In many situations, people hold themselves back—consciously or unconsciously—from using their full strength,” explained Richard Stephens, a psychologist at Keele University in the United Kingdom. “Swearing is an easily available way to help yourself feel focused, confident and less distracted, and ‘go for it’ a little more.” Stephens and his…
New York governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation on Friday aimed at holding large AI developers accountable for the safety of their models. The RAISE Act establishes rules for greater transparency, requiring these companies to publish information about their safety protocols and report any incidents within 72 hours of their occurrence. It comes a few months after California adopted similar legislation. But, the penalties aren’t going to be nearly as steep as they were initially presented when the bill passed back in June. While that version included fines of up to $10 million dollars for a company’s first violation and up to…
It may be happening quietly, but there is a revolution taking place with in-space transportation, and it opens up a world of possibilities. In January, a small spacecraft built by a California-based company called Impulse Space launched along with a stack of other satellites on a Falcon 9 rocket. Upon reaching orbit, the rocket’s upper stage sent the satellites zipping off on their various missions. And so it went with the Mira spacecraft built by Impulse, which is known as an orbital transfer vehicle. Mira dropped off several small CubeSats and then performed a number of high-thrust maneuvers to demonstrate…

What astronomers initially suspected to be a new exoplanet is actually a never-before-seen, head-on cosmic crash. As detailed in a study published today in the journal Science, researchers describe the aftermath of two separate collisions between two small, rocky cosmic objects called planetesimals. However, their findings were only made possible by some eagle eye imaging courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope. This celestial saga began almost 20 years ago. In 2008, astronomers detected an unexplained bright object located 25 light-years from Earth in the Piscis Austrinus…
According to Trump, the deal ensures that TikTok complies with the divest-or-ban law, but the White House is still not providing more details. Instead, the Trump administration “referred questions about the deal to TikTok,” Reuters reported. If the deal closes as expected on January 22, the new US company will have an estimated value of $14 billion, Vice President JD Vance noted in September. At that point, the deal will likely face mounting scrutiny from lawmakers, including Republicans, who aren’t yet sure if the US operation resolves all national security concerns. Chinese control of the algorithm was a particular sticking…

The four astronauts set to fly around the Moon during NASA’s Artemis II test flight depart the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, during a dress rehearsal for launch day on Dec. 20, 2025. From left are CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Koch. The launch day rehearsal, called a countdown demonstration test, simulated the launch day timeline, including the suiting up in their spacesuits and climbing in and out of their spacecraft. Because the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket upon which they will launch is not yet at the launch pad,…
