One of the follow-on payloads pushed to about a dozen organizations was what Kaspersky described as a “minimalistic backdoor.” It has the ability to execute commands, download files, and run shellcode payloads in memory—making the infection harder to detect. Kaspersky said that it observed a more complex backdoor dubbed QUIC RAT, installed on a single machine belonging to an educational institution located in Russia. Initial analysis found that it can inject payloads into the notepad.exe and conhost.exe processes and supports a variety of C2 communication protocols, including HTTP, UDP, TCP, WSS, QUIC, DNS, and HTTP/3. The 100 infected organizations were…
When I was around eight years old, I had an ant farm that I kept in my room. Unlike standard ant farms, where ants could burrow into layers of dirt and hide from whatever wide-eyed child had put them there, mine was filled with a transparent blue gel that served as both the material the ants dug through and the food they ate. Best of all, the gel let me keep tabs on my ants wherever they went, no matter how far they tunneled. Now that I think about it, it was pretty cruel to keep those poor ants in…
After a recent count, NASA Citizen Science is proud to report that more than 650 people who have volunteered to participate in NASA citizen science projects have co-authored peer-reviewed research papers with scientists on those project teams. These volunteers made incredible contributions like: And all of them saw their passion and dedication translated into lasting contributions to the scientific literature that will inform generations of researchers to come. Explore these frequently asked questions and discover how you, too, can be a part of scientific discovery and become a co-author. Why do peer-reviewed research papers matter? When scientists make a discovery,…
Developer Cyan Worlds is releasing remakes of the classic adventure game Myst and its sequel Riven on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and the Microsoft Store. Open Sourcing HDMI 2.1 Is An Open Sore For The HDMI Forum Nvidia has historically been better at maintaining their open source driver, a perfect example being that it properly supports HDMI 2.1 on Linux with no extra fuss. Unfortunately that is not true of AMD’s open source driver, but that may well change soon. The HDMI Forum previously rejected a Linux driver for AMD + Mesa that added HDMI 2.1 support as it needed to be added to the driver as opposed to NVIDIA who have the logic inside their firmware. This led to most Linux users preferring DisplayPort,…
The suits come in a wide array of sizes and thicknesses, and their design has improved massively in recent years, adding better flexibility and sealing. This fall, Patagonia will launch a new U-Zip version of the suit, featuring a long zipper that arcs from one shoulder to the other across the chest. I tested it this winter and it kept me extremely warm and prevented flushing (when water gets down your neck), better than any wetsuit I’ve used before. They are on the pricier side, but they are durable and should last you a long time.If you’d like to save…
OogImages/Shutterstock Pennsylvania is suing AI startup Character.AI for offering chatbots that pretend to be licensed doctors. Governor Josh Shapiro announced the lawsuit on Tuesday, and Pennsylvania and its Board of Medicine are seeking an injunction that would force Character.AI to stop violating a state law governing the practice of medicine. Other states, like Texas, have opened investigations into Character.AI for hosting chatbots that masquerade as mental health professionals, but Pennsylvania’s lawsuit is specifically focused on the willingness of the company’s chatbots to claim to have a medical license, even going…
I love Bonte Avond. It’s a Dutch indie studio whose games elegantly walk a line between being competent, polished projects and recognizing where it is worthwhile, or even hilarious, to cut corners. I first fell in love with Bonte Avond’s work via 2022’s Once Upon a Jester, which won the IGF Best Student Game Award in 2024, so it was a given that I immediately leap on their latest: Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime. Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime is a narrative adventure about a bear dressed as a frog who’s having a rough go of it lately. Her neighbors imply she’s…
This series of images shows NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover as it got a rock stuck to the drill on the end of its robotic arm and, after waving the arm and running the drill a few times, finally detached the rock. The imagery showing the entire process was captured by the black-and-white hazard cameras on the front of Curiosity’s chassis and by navigation cameras on its mast, or head. On April 25, 2026, Curiosity drilled a sample from a rock nicknamed “Atacama,” which is an estimated 1.5 feet in diameter at its base, 6 inches thick and weighs roughly 28.6…
Armed with some Python and a white-hot sense of injustice, one medical student spent six months trying to figure out whether an algorithm trashed his job application.
