On December 20, staff at Adventure Aquarium in Camden revealed the recent births of Duffy and Oscar, a pair of African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) and some much needed good news in light of ongoing conservation concerns.“These milestones are incredibly important for the critically endangered African penguin population, and we couldn’t be more proud to play a role in their future,” the aquarium just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania wrote in a social…
It’s difficult to underestimate the tremendous influence Homer’s epic has had on global culture. Nolan himself recalled seeing the Odyssey performed as a school play when he was just 5 or 6 years old. “I remember the Sirens and him being strapped to the mast and things like that,” he recently told Empire. “I think it’s in all of us, really. And when you start to break down the text and adapt it, you find that all of these other films—and all the films I’ve worked on—you know, they’re all from the Odyssey. It’s foundational.” In addition to Damon, the…
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra was previously rumored to include a single, “more capable” telephoto camera instead of two. However, it wasn’t clear how exactly it would improve image quality. Now, we have more information—and it’s much more exciting. Leaked screenshots of the camera app, shared on Weibo, reveal more details about the telephoto setup of the upcoming flagship. The images show standard zoom presets at 0.6x, 1x, and 2x. However, the telephoto section appears to allow smooth zooming between 3x and 4.3x, covering focal lengths from 70mm to 100mm. The interface also includes references to a “Leica 200MP continuous optical…
The Switch 2 Pro controller is the best controller Nintendo has ever made – and that’s saying something. It’s incredibly comfortable to hold, its joysticks are buttery smooth, and all of its buttons are wonderfully responsive. Nintendo even made it customizable this time with rear buttons that can easily be mapped inside of any game. The only downside? The Switch 2 Pro Controller costs $85, which seems a bit egregious when you can get an excellent controller like 8BitDo’s Ultimate 2 wireless gamepad for $60. As good as the competition is, though, you won’t find anything that can be easily…
The Indie Game Awards, a usually delightful and low-controversy annual celebration of the best of indie games in a given year, has found itself having to retract three different awards handed out in last week’s event, including its Game of the Year prize. That originally went to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which also won Best Debut Indie, both already controversial choices given the game is not “indie” by pretty much every understanding of the term, but was withdrawn on the allegation that the developers, Sandfall Interactive, were not honest about the game’s use of AI when it was submitted. The…
QUICK FACTSWhere is it? Atacama Desert, ChileWhat’s in the photo? A rare dusting of snow covers parts of one of the driest places on EarthWhich satellite took the photo? Landsat 9When was it taken? July 10, 2025This striking satellite photo captured a rare spectacle earlier this year, when “one of the driest places on Earth” experienced a rare snowstorm. This freak event temporarily turned the barren, rocky landscape white — and briefly shut down one of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes. The Atacama Desert is a roughly 40,500-square-mile (105,000 square kilometer) non-polar desert, located within a 1,000-mile-long (1,600 km) strip…
On Monday, the US Department of the Interior announced that it was pausing the leases on all five offshore wind sites currently under construction in the US. The move comes despite the fact that these projects already have installed significant hardware in the water and on land; one of them is nearly complete. In what appears to be an attempt to avoid legal scrutiny, the Interior is blaming the decisions on a classified report from the Department of Defense. The second Trump administration announced its animosity toward offshore wind power literally on day one, issuing an executive order on inauguration…
Oppo may be getting ready to launch a compact, higher-end phone in India. A new leak shared by tipster Debayan Roy on X points to a device named the Reno 15 Pro Mini, with several key specs now surfacing online. The phone is said to carry the model number CPH2813 and feature a 6.32-inch flat OLED display with 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. That would put it on the smaller side by current standards, while still offering a high-end screen. Powering the device is reportedly the MediaTek Dimensity 8450, the same chip used in the regular Reno 15.…
The Switch 2’s first year did come with a new Zelda game, though it’s not necessarily the one diehard fans are waiting for. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment ties directly into the storyline of Tears of the Kingdom, but it’s a musou-style hack-and-slash game rather than a traditional Legend of Zelda adventure. Still, the franchise’s producer says some of that action flavor could influence the direction of the next mainline entry. Age of Imprisonment was a collaboration between Koei Tecmo’s AAA Games Studio and the Zelda team at Nintendo, including long-time producer Eiji Aonuma. While AAA Games Studio would lead…
Milestone: “Taung Child” skull revealedDate: Dec. 23, 1924Where: Taung, South AfricaWho: Raymond Dart’s anthropological teamAt the end of 1924, an anthropologist began chipping away rock around an old primate skull — and rewrote the story of human evolution. The diminutive skull — about the size of a coffee mug — clearly belonged to a creature very different from us and yet also quite distinct from other apes and monkeys. But the man credited with its discovery, Raymond Dart, a professor of anatomy and anthropology at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, hadn’t actually excavated the skull. You may like Rather, it came…
