According to researchers at Germany’s University of Bonn, taking a cue from the animals’ filtration systems might help remove the vast majority of harmful plastic particulates from washing machine wastewater. Microplastics are a huge problem. At this point, they can be found both inside our bodies as well as some of the Earth’s most remote locations. Aside from taking thousands of years to decompose, the particles are increasingly linked to a…
Elon Musk’s X became the first large online platform fined under the European Union’s Digital Services Act on Friday. The European Commission announced that X would be fined nearly $140 million, with the potential to face “periodic penalty payments” if the platform fails to make corrections. A third of the fine came from one of the first moves Musk made when taking over Twitter. In November 2022, he changed the platform’s historical use of a blue checkmark to verify the identities of notable users. Instead, Musk started selling blue checks for about $8 per month, immediately prompting a wave of…

The European Union’s executive arm that it was investigating the social media company’s blue checkmarking verification system — first introduced when it was still known as Twitter — last year, along with other alleged DSA violations. Today’s concerns the “deceptive design” of the checkmark, as well as “the lack of transparency of [X’s] advertising repository, and the failure to provide access to public data for researchers.”The Commission’s issue with X’s verification system is that where blue checkmarks were once…
Marvel Studios has just announced it’s bringing the 2019 MCU finale Avengers: Endgame back to theaters next year. “Avengers: Endgame — Back in theaters, September 2026,” Marvel Studios announced on X on Friday. It’s accompanied by a short video that begins with a black screen before Anthony Mackie’s iconic “on your left” line plays, revealing the Avengers: Endgame logo to what is presumably a recording of a theater audience’s hoots and hollers. “Avengers, assemble,” Chris Evans’ Captain America says, accompanied by more screaming. We have reached the stage in pop culture where we are nostalgic for something that happened six…
Now in its 26th year, the event brings teams of middle and high school students to the lab to compete with home-built contraptions. Teenagers wielding power tools and plywood demonstrated their engineering prowess at the annual Invention Challenge at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California on Friday. Also in evidence: lots of small motors, 3D-printed gears, PVC pipe, and duct tape. First held at JPL in 1998, the event pits middle and high school teams against each other as they try to get handmade devices to accomplish a task that changes annually. For this year’s challenge, dubbed the “Bucket…
Retsef Levi, an operations management expert and ACIP member who expressed strong anti-vaccine views, said, “I think that the intention behind this [recommendation change is] that parents should carefully think about whether they want to take the risk of giving another vaccine to their child, and many of them might decide that they want to wait far more than two months, maybe years and maybe up to adulthood.” In the discussion before the vote, Meissner described the motivation as “baseless skepticism.” With a second vote, the panel created a new recommendation that parents and health care providers should consider testing…

Netflix’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, doesn’t believe that the streaming giant is a negative force in the film industry. Instead, the soon-to-be owner of Warner Bros. believes Netflix is more of a savior. Netflix announced its $82 billion bid to gobble up Warner Bros., the legendary film and media company, earlier today. Researchers completing one of the largest impact studies on the potential environmental impacts of deep-sea mining found a bit more than they bargained for on the ocean floor: 4,350 animals, each at least larger than 0.3 millimeters. From these, they ultimately identified 788 separate species of unique crustaceans, mollusks, marine bristle worms, and other creatures living in this sought after mining zone. While the team found that harvesting rare earth metals from over 13,000 feet below the ocean’s surface may not be quite as destructive as initially theorized, the disruptions…
Other results vary from game to game and from GPU to GPU. Borderlands 3, for example, performs quite a bit better on Windows than on SteamOS across all of our tested GPUs, sometimes by as much as 20 or 30 percent (with smaller gaps here and there). As a game from 2019 with no ray-tracing effects, it still runs serviceably on SteamOS across the board, but it was the game we tested that favored Windows the most consistently. Performance for Windows 11 25H2 vs. SteamOS 3.9 on the same hardware. In general, Windows edges out SteamOS on dedicated GPUs, even…
