The Trump administration says its proposal to roll back vehicle fuel economy standards, announced officially in the Oval Office on Wednesday, is an attempt to shave dollars off the ballooning cost of new cars in the US.But the intended price drops likely won’t show up on dealership lots and showroom floors for months if not years, given the length of automakers’ product planning schedule. It would also likely force Americans to pay more, long-term, at another place they tend to visit more frequently: the pump. The proposal from the US Department of Transportation would require automakers to reach a fleet-wide average…
In a post to Arc Raiders’ official Discord server, Ossen, Embark Studio’s community lead, said that the “Hidden Bunker” activity has been pulled “from the rotation to prevent unfair exploits while [the team] are working on a fix.” It follows as players have been using the various wall exploits to kill each other and glitch into rooms and steal loot for free. The Hidden Bunker is one of the handful of map conditions that rotate in and out of the game. As far as activities go, it’s not terribly exciting: activate a bunch of satellites, download some stuff from a…
A United States Inspector General report publicly released today found that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth could have put US troops and military operations at risk by using the consumer messaging service Signal to share sensitive, real-time details in March about a planned attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen. The IG first shared the classified report with Congress on Tuesday. The report contains only one direct recommendation: that the chief of US Central Command’s Special Security Office “review the command’s classification procedures for compliance” with Department of Defense regulations “and issue additional procedures, as necessary, to ensure proper portion marking of…

True to their more elusive nature, the timeline of when cats domesticated is more murky. Our homespun feline friends appear to be a more recent arrival in some parts of the world, likely only arriving in Europe about 2,000 years ago. Their spread was assisted by the Roman military, with house cats ultimately reaching Britain by around 100 CE. The findings are detailed in a study recently published…
Before Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Three Kingdoms, there was Total War: Medieval and its successor, Total War: Medieval II. It’s been a long wait. Almost two decades, in fact. But the hit strategy series is going back to Europe. Creative Assembly marked the franchise’s 25-year anniversary on Thursday by announcing Total War: Medieval III. The next Total War promises a return to the series roots but also a future-facing evolution. Here’s the press release: Now in early pre-production, this next chapter is both a tribute to its legendary predecessors and a bold revolution for the series. Built as…
At the VA, Lavignia attempted to use an AI tool to write code for the agency’s systems and suggested the agency move away from paper forms entirely. He built a tool to “munch” data about the agency’s contracts to identify those that could be cut.He was fired from his role at the VA in May after he spoke to a reporter about his work at DOGE. Lavingia told WIRED at the time that he really believed in the role of technology to try and make government services better, but he quickly became disillusioned with DOGE’s lack of organization and transparency,…

While fleas, rats, and global trade played a major role, no single organism or action allowed the bubonic plague (Yersinia pestis) to wreak havoc during the 14th century. Understanding the complex network of preceding events and their consequences is the only way to get a clearer picture of the Black Death’s infamous devastation. Now, researchers say newly analyzed evidence suggests an additional, unexpected reason for the plague’s medieval resurgence. Writing in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, a team from the University of Cambridge in the…
One thing I love about this job is learning something new about games I do not play. That includes learning that Fortnite has historically either obscured or omitted male nipples in its various skins. Until now, that is. Homer Simpson was the first man to free the nipple last month, and now new character Carter Wu is getting a skin that lets him bare it all. As IGN lays out, Fortnite has featured several shirtless skins of both fictional characters and real-world figures, but each of them has either covered up their chest, like putting a pelt on Kratos from…
The global economy is about to undergo a major shift—and it’s going to be centered around cryptocurrency, according to Jeremy Allaire, cofounder and CEO of Circle, a software company that built one of the world’s top stablecoins. To facilitate this transition, Circle is creating what Allaire calls an “economic OS for the internet.”“Basically, there are new operating system paradigms that emerge all the time. The web is one, mobile is one, cloud is another, AI is another OS paradigm,” Allaire told WIRED’s editor at large, Steven Levy, onstage at the Big Interview event in San Francisco on Thursday. “And these…
