Fortnite’s crossover slop has now spread to engulf the Wizarding World as Epic’s inescapable battle royale is gearing up to add cosmetics based on Harry Potter. The game has become such a worldwide phenomenon that there are plenty of leak accounts on social media routinely posting about upcoming collaborations, but the account that leaked the Harry Potter skins had a different motive than simply informing people, as they have stated they “spoiled” the surprise in protest of it inclusion because of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s transphobic rhetoric.  Rowling has been a vocal figurehead in the fight against trans rights…

Justin Hall, left, controls a subscale aircraft as Justin Link holds the aircraft in place during preliminary engine tests on Friday, Sept. 12, 2025, at NASA’s Armstong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. Hall, chief pilot at the center’s Dale Reed Subscale Flight Research Laboratory, and Link, a pilot for small uncrewed aircraft systems, are building the large subscale aircraft to support increasingly complex flight research, offering a more flexible and cost-effective alternative to crewed missions. Once ready, the aircraft will help evaluate new concepts, technologies, and flight controls to support NASA missions on Earth and beyond. Image Credit: NASA/Christopher…

The ripples of the auto industry’s chip shortage are still being felt, as evidenced by Honda. Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the automaker will suspend production in Japan on January 5 and 6. (Honda didn’t specify the affected factories.) In addition, all three of the automaker’s Guangqi Honda Automobile plants in China will shut down from December 29 to January 2.The halt is an outgrowth of a chip shortage stemming from a recent geopolitical proxy war in the Netherlands, of all places. In October, the Dutch government, bowing to pressure from the Trump administration, seized control of the Chinese-owned chipmaker…

Developer Mark Ffrench has carved out something of a unique niche on Steam, regularly releasing fill-a-pix logic puzzle games of enormous scale and surprising depth. Among others in 2024 there was Proverbs, a wall-sized puzzle based on Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting Netherlandish Proverbs, and 2024: Mosaic Retrospective, which contained dozens of interlocking images recalling major events from the whole year. Following Mosaic of the Pharaohs earlier this year, we now have the most elaborate entry yet: Mosaic of the Strange—a game that combines the same logic puzzle conceit with a pixelated point-n-click adventure. Right, describing a logic puzzle is always the…

The T1 smartphone from Trump Mobile remains non-existent vaporware, but the company is still finding new ways to take people’s money. Anyone who desperately wants to fund this sham can now buy a refurbished phone from the company. The business’s website has listings for “Renewed” models of the Samsung S24 and S23 and the iPhone 15 and 14. Gizmodo noticed that Trump Mobile is selling these other brands’ phones for the same cost, or sometimes more, than the same refurbs from other retailers. Seems pretty par for the course.NBC News opted to order one of the T1 phones in August to…

Like a game of cosmic bumper cars, scientists think the early days of our solar system were a time of violent turmoil, with planetesimals, asteroids, and comets smashing together and pelting the Earth, Moon, and the other inner planets with debris. Now, in a historical milestone, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has directly imaged similar catastrophic collisions in a nearby planetary system around another star, Fomalhaut. “This is certainly the first time I’ve ever seen a point of light appear out of nowhere in an exoplanetary system,” said principal investigator Paul Kalas of the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s absent in…

In Vattenfall’s central control room, human operators aided by algorithms monitor the electricity grid, and the market, to judge whether their pumped hydro plants ought to be generating or pumping. Kühne adds that the frequency of alternating between these modes has gone up over time because of renewables’ variability. If you can get the response right, however, you can make a lot of money. On its website, Vattenfall describes pumped hydro as “highly profitable.” A paper published last month estimated the effect of rising renewables in Spain between now and 2050. With gradually decreasing electricity prices, higher variability, and less need…

Bethesda Game Studios may have a reputation for putting out bug-ridden games with barely functioning UIs and then leaving it all for modders to fix, but it generally does this with stunningly wonderful games in which tolerating the jank is more than worthwhile. Starfield, however, is the studio’s first big first-party miss since, wow, 2006’s IHRA Drag Racing: Sportsman Edition. What’s more striking is that the space-faring epic has, since its September 6, 2023 release, put out a single desultory expansion pack, and that was well over a year ago now. New rumors of a rejuvenated version to accompany the…

Trump media, the company behind the president’s personal social media platform Truth Social, is inexplicably merging with a Google-backed fusion energy company called TAE Technologies. The deal is worth $6 billion, .Why is an entity known for publishing frenzied hot takes by the president at 3AM combining with a fusion energy company? Who the heck really knows, but a statement says the two organizations will join together to build the “world’s first utility-scale fusion power plant.” This would be huge, if true, as there are currently no operational commercial nuclear fusion power plants. We know what TAE would bring to the…
