The tree canopy is shrinking across thousands of California schoolyards, which may leave children more vulnerable to the harmful effects of extreme heat, according to a recent study. In the research, published in the journal Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, scientists looked at snapshots of more than 7,000 public schools in urban areas across the Golden State. The analysis included schoolyards and the areas immediately surrounding them. One image, taken in 2018, provided baseline information about each school’s existing tree canopy. The next, taken in 2022, showed whether that canopy had increased, decreased or stayed stable.Across the schools evaluated, the majority…

Just a couple of months after announcing Rowatch D2, Rogbid is announcing its successor globally, called the Rowatch D3. It retains the rotating crown design, along with a dedicated ECG touch zone and an extra button that directly opens the blood-pressure section. Rogbid Rowatch D3 can track your BP and ECG The most notable change is inside. Rogbid says the watch now uses a sealed airbag system along with a Murata micro-air…
Thanksgiving brings a welcome surprise as LEGO’s most popular Christmas set returns to Amazon inventory after two weeks of complete stock depletion that frustrated holiday shoppers. At $25, down from $39, the Santa’s Sleigh building set hits a Black Friday price that likely removes LEGO’s profit margin entirely as they race to clear seasonal inventory before Christmas passes and demand evaporates. The aggressive pricing reflects LEGO’s urgency to move remaining units rather than holding stock that becomes instantly obsolete on December 26th. With over 30,000 units already sold and limited time remaining before the holiday, this inventory replenishment at record-low…

A series of severe, decades-long droughts ushered the end of the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the world’s oldest civilizations, a new study finds. This Indus Valley Civilization (also known as the “Harappan” civilization) flourished between 5,000 and 3,500 years ago in a region that stretched across the modern-day India-Pakistan border. Its people created cities, such as Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, which had sophisticated water-management systems. They also created a written script, which remains undeciphered by modern scholars, and they traveled to Mesopotamia, where they conducted trade. Why their civilization declined has long been a matter of debate. Now, in a new…
Plex is starting to enforce its new rules, which prevent users from remotely accessing a personal media server without a subscription fee.Previously, people outside of a server owner’s network could access the owner’s media library through Plex for free. Under the new rules announced in March, a server owner needs to have a Plex Pass subscription, which starts at $7 per month, to grant users remote access to their server. Alternatively, someone can remotely access another person’s Plex server by buying their own Plex Pass or a Remote Watch Pass, which is a subscription with fewer features than a Plex…
Google is battling a fresh wave of privacy backlash as viral posts claim the company is secretly mining Gmail messages to feed its AI models. The alarm bells started ringing after a Malwarebytes blog post alleged Google had altered its policies, prompting fears that users’ emails and attachments were quietly being used to train the Gemini AI system. Image: Sundry Photography – stock.adobe.com But Google says that is flat-out wrong. “These reports are misleading. We have not changed anyone’s settings, Gmail Smart Features have existed for many years, and we do not use your Gmail content for training our Gemini…
Today is American Thanksgiving and I’m one of the many folks (hopefully, dear god hopefully) who is choosing not to celebrate the holiday with a big family gathering. It sucks, but it’s a necessary sacrifice so that we can all be safe, healthy, and alive to spend next Thanksgiving together. This story originally ran on November 26, 2020. We’re republishing it today for Thanksgiving 2025. Even without the specter of covid hanging over us, it’s been a long time since my extended family gathered together and had a good old-fashioned Thanksgiving meal. I miss my mother’s turkey and my aunt’s…
