It was a good thing that the internet bullied Paramount into fixing Sonic’s horrifying human-like form in the first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. If that hadn’t happened, we likely wouldn’t have gotten the great follow-ups and Keanu Reeves playing Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. But even five years later, who wouldn’t be morbidly curious to know what the movie would have looked like if Paramount hadn’t gone back to the drawing board? That’s what a fan group is giving us the chance to find out with Sonic the Hedgehog: The 2019 Cut. The fan remake of the 2020…
Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Photosynthesis. Learning how plants use the sun and water to make their own food is a staple of biology class and makes life on Earth possible. Still, not all of the over 300,000 known plant species are food-producing powerhouses that reproduce sexually. Instead, plants like those in the genus Balanophora are asexual parasites. These alien-esque plants challenge the very foundations of plant biology. “My long-standing aim is to rethink what it truly means to be a plant,” Kenji Suetsugu, a botanist at Kobe University in Japan,…

Scientists say they’ve developed a breakthrough 3D wiring solution that allows a 100-fold increase in the number of quantum bits (qubits) a quantum computing chip can support.Typical quantum computing processors (QPUs) are built with two-dimensional, horizontal wiring, just like the central processing units (CPUs) in our classical devices. But this traditional wiring limits the number of qubits scientists can cram onto a given processor. Currently available chips from Google and IBM, for example, contain approximately 105 qubits and 120 qubits, respectively. The new architecture, called VIO-40K, overcomes this limitation by using three-dimensional, vertical wiring, according to representatives of QuantWare, which developed…
It looks like Disney wasted no time delivering on CEO Bob Iger’s promise to bring AI-generated content to Disney+. On Thursday, the company announced the start of a three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI to bring more than 200 of its beloved characters, including those from Star Wars and Pixar, to the Sora app and ChatGPT. With the deal in place, OpenAI users will be able to prompt ChatGPT to generate images that tap into Disney’s intellectual property, with costumes, props, vehicles and environments covered. The agreement does not include voices or “talent likenesses,” meaning Sora users won’t be able prompt the…
At the top end of Sony’s OLED spectrum, things are looking mighty fine. It has a stylish look, with super thin bezels, and comes loaded with Google TV, which is easy to use and responsive. While the brightness doesn’t quite reach the same peak levels as other screens on the list, it’s still an excellent buy for anyone with a sharp eye that can appreciate a really well-tuned television. It has excellent gaming options,…
Laptop upgrades can cost a pretty penny, depending on the features you’re after. If you’re a work professional or a student looking to upgrade their everyday machine, you need a model with a good display, a comfortable keyboard, a muscular processor, plus at least 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Most options offering these and more – especially the ones from known brands – sit well over $1,200, but that’s not the case today. We just spotted the 17-inch HP touchscreen laptop going for just $1,000 at Amazon, after the retailer generously took a whopping 67% off its usual $3,000 tag.…
