Well, the moment has come. After writing dedicated roundups for my top three favorite tablet deals, smartwatch offers, and headphone promos this Black Friday, it’s now time for the next entry in the series — my top three Black Friday phone deals. Now, as with the previous “episodes,” I’ll pretty much repeat myself: it’s truly, extremely, exquisitely hard to pick just three from the 60+ offers we’ve gathered in our best Black Friday phone deals pick. Nevertheless, just like the previous times, I’ve shortlisted my top three favorite phone deals this Black Friday, as well as including a few notable mentions.…

Yesterday I wrote about a deal on the Nothing (1) Headset, an awesome pair of active noise-canceling headphones that compete with some of the best available options at a fraction of the price. For those who don’t feel like compromising, and already have Apple devices, I also found a juicy discount on the Apple AirPods Max. That’s right, Apple’s biggest and baddest headphones are marked down to just $400 at both Best Buy and Amazon.Photograph: Brenda StolyarEven for the steep price tag, the audio quality on the AirPods Max is nothing short of incredible. When WIRED writer Parker Hall reviewed…

EU member states have agreed on a position regarding online child protection legislation that doesn’t force global tech companies to identify and remove child sexual abuse materials (CSAM.) This is being seen as a major victory for US tech companies like Google and Meta, according to reporting by Reuters. This new European Council language contradicts a 2023 position in which the European Parliament would have required messaging services, app stores and ISPs to report and remove CSAM materials and instances of grooming. The proposed legislation doesn’t have any of that.Instead, it tasks major tech companies with assessing the risk of their…

Yeah, I’m playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Not the weird campaign or the extra-large Zombies offering, but the multiplayer. Team Deathmatch, mostly, maybe some Kill Confirmed. A few hours a couple of days a week, ass parked on the couch, brain on autopilot, cranking some CoD. This describes me recently, but it could also describe versions of me stretching back more than 15 years ago.  It’s not nostalgia as much as it’s resignation, or the quiet reliance on something familiar. Halo Infinite feels empty and sad. Battlefield 6 is too big and tactical for my twitchy shooter preference.…

Cybersecurity researchers at Microsoft have identified a critical flaw in modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems that means conversations with chatbots may have been intercepted through attacks by hackers. This would bypass the encryption that is meant to keep chats private. The attack technique, called Whisper Leak, is a type of “man-in-the-middle attack” in which hackers can intercept messages as they are in transit between servers. It worked because the hackers were able to read the metadata of messages and therefore infer their contents.Researchers outlined the attack in a study uploaded Nov. 5 to the preprint arXiv database. They informed Large Language…

In a smartphone world where all devices look the same, launching a phone with a faux-denim back and a dedicated subwoofer is bold, to say the least. It’s also refreshing. The Poco F8 Ultra doesn’t look anything like its predecessor as well, polishing the Ultra experience and doing so in style. This phone screams flagship, and thanks to the Bose sound, it does it in quite a loud voice. From the 6.9-inch OLED screen that’s impressively bright to the versatile camera system, fast chipset, and the aforementioned subwoofer, it’s all engineered to give those iPhones and Galaxies up there a run…

It’s a good idea to look for Black Friday Apple deals this time of year if you’re thinking about upgrading an aging laptop or picking up a pair of AirPods or an Apple Watch as a gift. One of the best discounts we’re tracking at the moment is on the M4-powered Mac Mini desktop — it’s $120 off right now, down from $599 to $479. That applies to the 16GB of RAM/256GB SSD model, and it’s pretty close to its all-time-low price. We gave the Mac mini M4 a 90 in our review, in part, because it packs an incredible amount…

After Myanmar’s military junta raided a notorious scam compound and destroyed buildings with explosives in October, officials claimed the country would entirely “eradicate” forced scamming within its borders. Now newly released satellite images of the targeted KK Park scam center reveal that only buildings in one limited section of the compound were destroyed during the initial raids. Experts on scam compounds, meanwhile, say the entire effort is likely “propaganda.”High-resolution images of the KK Park scam compound, which is located near the Myanmar-Thailand border, show how military forces have razed multiple buildings to the ground, leaving piles of rubble remaining in…

When I try to use my mouse in The Chef’s Shift, a stern reminder pops up on the screen: Use your keyboard! Though The Chef’s Shift may look like the classic restaurant management games Diner Dash or Cake Mania, it’s got a distinct twist: You don’t use a controller or mouse at all. It’s all controlled by keyboard typing. If a pizzeria customer asks for pasta with pesto, that means typing the word above the pasta noodles, then the pesto sauce. Typing another word, above the customer’s head, delivers it to their table. Then another word to pay at the…
