Fresh off a reorganized deal with OpenAI, Microsoft is diversifying its AI investments. The company says it will invest up to $10 billion in Anthropic. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has pledged up to $5 billion in the Claude maker. The three-way partnership, which includes various other commitments, could be seen as further evidence that an AI bubble is about to burst. As part of the deal, Anthropic has committed to buy $30 billion of Microsoft Azure cloud computing capacity. Anthropic says it will also contract additional capacity, up to one gigawatt. In addition, Microsoft Foundry customers will gain access to several Claud models.…
“The only justice I’m getting is exposing this man and having posted that video,” she added. “And it has gone viral. Now he can live with shame and embarrassment if people have seen it.” “I’m the victim!” she said. “Is this making sense to any-fucking-body?” Her numerous videos attracted huge followings—anywhere from 5 million to 30 million views each—and DoorDash eventually felt the need to respond. “DoorDash never deactivates someone for reporting [sexual assault]—full stop,” said the company. But, it added, “posting a video of a customer in their home, and disclosing their personal details publicly, is a clear violation…

Dispatch’s eight-episode run is over, and I stand firm in my belief that the best moment in AdHoc’s superhero workplace comedy comes in episode five, “Team Building.” As the title suggests, protagonist Robert Robertson III takes his staff of reformed villains out for a night at a bar. The problem is, they’re headed to a villain bar. Robert certainly doesn’t look the part, and the bar’s goon and lackey patrons are ready to start a fight when they see him there. What happens next is probably Dispatch’s best use of the old Telltale house style, and it’s got players popping…
Waymo is launching in five new cities across Texas and Florida. Autonomous vehicles in Miami, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando will begin accepting rides next year. The Alphabet-owned company said operations (sans passengers) will begin on Tuesday in Miami. The other cities will follow “over the coming weeks.” This phase is where the vehicles drive around town without anyone inside. That gives the company a chance to spot local quirks and adjust the driving algorithm accordingly.Waymo said this local adjustment phase requires fewer changes with each added city. “This data feeds into a flywheel of continuous improvement, bolstered by rigorous…
Meta got a big legal victory today when a federal judge ruled against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and in favor of the technology company. The FTC had sued Meta back in 2020 over the company’s 2012 acquisition of Instagram for $1 billion and the 2014 deal that saw it purchase WhatsApp for what turned out to be $21 billion in cash and Facebook stock. The original price was $19 billion, but thanks to a rally in Facebook shares before the deal closed, the final purchase price was $21 billion.FTC claimed Facebook bought WhatsApp and Instagram to avoid competitionThe FTC…
US Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), the subcommittee chairman, defended the bills at today’s hearing. “These reforms will add much-needed certainty, predictability, and accountability to the broadband permitting process and help expedite deployment,” he said. Cable lobby group NCTA called the hearing “important progress” toward “the removal of regulatory impediments that slow deployment to unserved areas.” Another cable lobby group, America’s Communications Association, said the permitting reform bills “will strip away red tape and enable broadband, cable, and telecommunications providers to redirect resources to upgrading and expanding their networks and services, especially in rural areas.” $42 billion program delays Much of…

There are stromatolites, or microbial mats, found in Australia that date to 3.48 billion years ago. Other traces of ancient life have been more controversial: In 2017, scientists argued that chemical traces in 3.95-billion-year-old rocks from Labrador, Canada may constitute Earth’s earliest evidence of life. But…
When the Nintendo Switch 2 launched this summer, a cheaper, Japanese-only version of the console was made available domestically. Some speculated the more affordable console (which cost around $340 compared to the multi-language Switch 2’s $480) was offered to address a weak yen or the cost of living in Japan, but whatever the reason, it helped: the Switch 2 was Japan’s biggest ever console launch, according to VGC. In June, the other Japanese gaming behemoth, Sony, said it was keeping an eye on the Switch 2 in terms of competition, but wasn’t all that concerned because of the PlayStation 5’s…
