This coverage is made possible through a partnership between Grist, WABE, Atlanta’s NPR station; and WBEZ, a public radio station serving the Chicago metropolitan region. When most people think about national forests, they imagine vast Western landscapes: Alaska, the Rockies, the Pacific Northwest. But millions of acres of federal woodlands dot the eastern half of the country, too. These great swaths of vibrant ecosystems have long been free of roads, protected by a policy called, appropriately enough, the “roadless rule.”That may soon change. You may like Adopted in 2001 during the final days of the Clinton administration, the Roadless Area Conservation…
Everyone who’s anyone in the gaming industry is currently having their hit game franchise turned into a movie or TV series. For Ubisoft, that means an Assassin’s Creed adaptation on Netflix and a new Far Cry series on FX. The latter is being run by Noah Hawley, whose illustrious credits include Fargo and Alien: Earth. Odds are he’ll make a good TV show, but it’s not clear he understands how the games he’s adapting really works. The showrunner recently explained why he’s penning original stories for the Far Cry TV adaptation rather than borrowing from Ubisoft’s existing games. On the…
The reviews of the 9950X3D2 are in from discerning reviewers. TL;DR; – it’s not for everyone, but it’s very much for some. The return of the 3060 is almost here, wait – DDR pricing has an upside?, D-Link routers take another beating in the security section, XBox mode, and the tipping point is here for IPv6 (I know, I know: much wow, very excite!) This show cannot go on without you – you know who you are, please consider helping our efforts. It most definitely helps keep us on the air. And helps Josh buy burgers. Thank you!
It took just a few months of President Donald Trump’s second term for Palantir employees to question their company’s commitments to civil liberties. Last fall, Palantir seemed to become the technological backbone of Trump’s immigration enforcement machinery, providing software identifying, tracking, and helping deport immigrants on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security, when current and former employees started ringing the alarm. Around that time, two former employees reconnected by phone. Right as they picked up the call, one of them asked, “Are you tracking Palantir’s descent into fascism?” “That was their greeting,” the other former employee says. “There’s this…
Tesla completely ended its free lifetime Supercharging offer way back in 2018, but it has given customers the perk for certain promotions since then. It brought back free Supercharging for Model S and X a couple of times in 2019, for instance. The automaker’s latest offer is for new purchases for a Model 3 Premium or Performance vehicle in North America. On its website, Tesla has announced that it’s including one year of free supercharging with a Model 3 Premium or Performance, though the offer is “subject to change or end at any time.”As Electrek notes, this is a nice…
Samsung doesn’t seem done experimenting with tri-fold phones just yet. A new patent suggests the company could be working on a different take, something that looks a bit more usable day to day. Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold The concept, referred to as the Galaxy Z TriFold Wide, leans toward a wider form factor. Closed, it would behave more like a regular phone, just slightly wider than usual. Unfold it, and it turns into a larger, tablet-like screen that’s better suited for video and multitasking compared to the first-generation TriFold. That alone makes it feel like a response to one of…
Imagine getting a knee replacement made of living materials rather than metal and plastic.Researchers at Columbia University and the University of Missouri are working to make that vision a reality. Their 3D-printed knee implant, called NOVAKnee, is composed of a biodegradable scaffold packed with stem-cell-derived bone and cartilage. The idea is that, once inside the body, the scaffold will gradually disappear as it’s replaced by new bone and cartilage that will integrate into the patient’s skeleton.Conventional knee implants last up to 20 years, and ideally, they’re installed in later adulthood, when the patient is likely to need only one implant…
Over the past couple of days, several reports have surfaced claiming that Sony has introduced a new form of DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Supposedly, said DRM, which many believe was installed in the latest firmware updates for both systems, imposes a 30-day limit on any new digital purchases on either system. After these 30 days are up, you’ll reportedly be required to connect your PlayStation consoles to the internet so that Sony can validate your purchases. The primary source of this story is a video by homebrew and console modding content creator…
You know that old meme with the angry looking little kid posed behind the words, “Congrats”; “Happy for you”; “Nice”? That was me reading Caroline Bicks’ Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. Here’s a snippet of the synopsis: “After Caroline Bicks was named the University of Maineʼs inaugural Stephen E. King Chair in Literature, she became the first scholar to be granted extended access by King to his private archives, a treasure trove of manuscripts that document the legendary writerʼs creative process—most of them never before studied or published.”You hate to see someone else living…
