The stars of the show in this week’s science news were actually the stars themselves. It was a truly brilliant week for updates and discoveries related to these celestial furnaces.Starting close to home, the sun spit out three consecutive solar outbursts toward Earth, causing this month’s second launch attempt of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket to be scrubbed and bringing auroras as far south as Florida. Luckily, our planet’s protective magnetosphere sheltered us from any harmful effects, but severe geomagnetic storms could be more damaging in the future, owing to a newly discovered weak spot in Earth’s invisible shield. The sun…
This story originally appeared on Inside Climate News and is part of the Climate Desk collaboration. It can carry life-threatening diseases. It’s difficult to find and hard to kill. And it’s obsessed with human blood. The Aedes aegypti is a species of mosquito that people like Tim Moore, district manager of a mosquito control district on the Western Slope of Colorado, really don’t want to see.“Boy, they are locked into humans,” Moore said. “That’s their blood meal.”This mosquito species is native to tropical and subtropical climates, but as climate change pushes up temperatures and warps precipitation patterns, the Aedes aegypti—which can spread…

In a massive departure from the series norm, the campaign in the newly released Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is an online co-op experience from start to finish. Not only is the campaign always online, but as if it thought it was Elden Ring, you can’t pause it, and you’ll get booted for idling. Maybe it’s secretly an experimental art project on the nature of entropy. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 comes out today with a full campaign and multiplayer mode. The campaign, it seems, goes all in on co-op play. The option to play campaigns in co-op…
Meta has announced that BirdyChat and Haiket are the first third-party messaging services that will have interoperability with WhatsApp in the European Union. The company has been working on enabling third-party chats since 2023 after the rules of the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) came into effect. It apparently held small scale tests over the past few months to make sure WhatsApp does work with BirdyChat and Haiket, and it will roll out integration with the services across Europe “soon.”Users will be able to send messages, images, voice messages, videos and files between the messaging services whether they’re on Android…
Admit it, you never really considered the Beats Solo Buds a top wireless earbuds option for you. Released back in the summer of 2024, these are obviously nowhere near as sophisticated (or as aggressively advertised as) Apple’s AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods 4, lacking active noise cancellation, spatial audio technology, and even the most basic charging case. But at 30 bucks under an already reasonable list price of $69, none of those omissions is likely to matter much to bargain hunters in the search for the perfect stocking stuffer this Christmas. Clearly, you’re looking at a “true” Black…
Scientists have used genetically engineered bacteria to simultaneously create and color fabrics in a one-pot method. Compared with current methods that rely on fossil fuels, the new technique offers a simpler and more sustainable way to produce colored textiles. In a new study described Nov. 12 in the journal Trends in Biotechnology, the researchers created cellulose-based fabrics spanning the colors of the rainbow by altering the conditions used to grow the bacteria.Synthetic fibers rely “heavily on chemical synthesis and post-treatment steps that are energy-intensive, laborious, and environmentally harmful,” said study lead author Sang Yup Lee, a professor in the Department of…
Valve made a big return to PC hardware this week. The company, most famous for its PC gaming platform, Steam, announced a new home console called Steam Machine alongside a new version of the Steam Controller, and a new virtual reality headset dubbed the Steam Frame. The Steam Machine is a revival of Valve’s original Steam Machine, a failed attempt to bring PC gaming to the living room almost exactly 10 years ago. Now, it’s back, built on the success of the Steam Deck handheld. Valve claims the new Steam Machine is six times more powerful than the Steam Deck, and…
Earlier this year, I played Metroid Prime for the first time in at least a decade. Back in 2023, Nintendo released a remastered version of the 2002 classic for the Switch, and I felt like dusting it off once we finally knew Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would arrive this year after about a decade in development. The original Metroid Prime holds up surprisingly well for a 23-year-old game, but there were plenty of times where it showed its age. The platforming often felt overly clunky, as precise control over Samus Aran is not the game’s strong suit. Similarly, dealing with…
Losing your keys, wallet or backpack happens to the best of us and Apple just made the solution super affordable. The company kicked off a serious Black Friday sale on AirTags, dropping prices to record lows we have never seen on these trackers before. The four-pack now sits at $64 instead of the usual $99, while a single AirTag costs just $18 down from $29. What really makes this deal great is that AirTags now cost less than the main competitors like Samsung and Tile, despite offering significantly more reliable tracking thanks to Apple’s massive network of devices. See 1x…
