For years, I thought cloud storage was digital freedom. I turned on auto-sync and all of my files became available no matter where I was, my phone had more free space, and my precious photos and videos felt safe “up there”. It was so effortless and convenient, almost magical. But the illusion cracked once I actually started using those files. My memories, my work, my life’s archive were all rented out to a service that could vanish, lock me out or raise prices at any time. WhatsApp is following in the footsteps of fellow Meta-owned companies, Instagram and Facebook. The European Commission will give WhatsApp’s open channels the designation of Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA), Bloomberg reports. The Commission has yet to make a public announcement on the matter, but has reportedly told Meta. This label gives the EU greater regulatory power over WhatsApp in areas such as content moderation and data sharing. WhatsApp will also need to conduct an annual independent audit and have transparent advertising practices, among other mandates. The new label isn’t exactly a surprise. Prehistoric Jomon people in Japan had ‘little to no’ DNA from the mysterious Denisovans, study finds
The Jomon people living in prehistoric Japan had “little to no” Denisovan DNA, suggesting their ancestors may not have been in contact with this now-extinct group of Eurasian humans, a new study reports. The finding was part of an investigation into hundreds of ancient and modern genomes to determine when and where modern humans (Homo sapiens) mated with our mysterious Denisovan cousins.”Surprisingly, we found that individuals in the Japanese archipelago from the prehistoric Jomon period [from around 16,000 to 3,000 years ago] carried the least Denisovan ancestry among ancient and present-day East Asians,” the researchers wrote in the study, which was…
If you’re creating content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts, there’s one simple upgrade that can dramatically improve the quality of your videos: invest in a good microphone. It might sound minor, but clear, professional audio can make the difference between a clip that feels polished and one that viewers scroll past. Many creators focus heavily on lighting, cameras, and editing but overlook how crucial sound is. Even if your audience doesn’t consciously notice poor audio, they’ll feel that something’s off—and it can make your content seem less professional overall. The truth is, nine times out of ten, the…

Scientists have developed an entirely new kind of microchip that uses microwaves instead of conventional digital circuitry to perform operations. The processor, which can perform faster than conventional CPUs, is the world’s first fully functional microwave neural network (MNN) that can fit on a chip, scientists reported in a study published Aug. 14 in the journal Nature Electronics.High-bandwidth applications, such as radar imaging, demand high-speed processing. Microwaves that operate in the analog spectrum can meet the processing needs of these applications, which is why scientists have pursued this new approach to computing.
