The carvings, which have been carbon-dated to the Late Bronze Age, may have been offered to the god Odin. When laborers were digging a drainage ditch in 1836, they discovered a set of eight human figures, two miniature boats and an assortment of arms and tiny weapons underneath a layer of blue clay.…
This is arguably personal taste. Certainly if you’re looking to stop eyeballs mid-scroll with oversaturated, eye-popping color, the Insta360 X5 is your friend. Personally though, I like the color coming from the GoPro much better, even when shooting in 8-bit color. It’s probably worth checking out some video from both to see which look you prefer before you invest. One advantage of the GoPro is that if you do want to get into postproduction coloring in apps like DaVinci Resolve, the 10-bit color option gives you a lot more latitude.I also found that, in bright light, shooting the sort of…
The eerie casts of the victims of the A.D. 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius paint a desolate picture of the destruction the volcano wrought on ancient cities near modern Naples. Pompeii became a 2,000-year-old time capsule when the city was frozen underneath layers of pumice, ash and pyroclastic flows.Over the span of two centuries, archaeologists have uncovered Pompeii and its neighbor Herculaneum bit by bit, identifying quotidian remains of Roman art, architecture and food. But less attention has been paid to the things missing from the cities — and the people who carried them as they escaped the obliterating force…
After months of deployments by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the National Guard across American cities, federal agents have been preparing to descend into San Francisco.Local resistance groups have been coordinating with activists in other cities across the country that have been besieged by federal law enforcement. Thousands of volunteers, coordinating through Signal group chats, Zoom calls, and social media posts, planned protests and spread the word that federal troops are on their way to San Francisco. Even though they aren’t—yet. On Thursday morning, SF mayor Daniel Lurie posted on Instagram and X to announce that he had spoken with…
Around 2,000 years ago, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius obliterated Pompeii and Herculaneum, entombing the two cities and victims within a scorching mix of molten rock, pumice, ash and gas. With the Roman cities frozen in time, archaeologists know a huge deal about the lives of those who perished — but what about the survivors? In this excerpt from “Escape from Pompeii: The Great Eruption of Mount Vesuvius and Its Survivors” (Oxford University Press, 2025), author Steven L. Tuck, history professor at Miami University in Ohio, examines the historical and archaeological evidence of the people who escaped the destruction of Pompeii…
“If there’s a camera that knows the cards, there is always some kind of underlying threat. Customers are gonna be essentially at the mercy of the person setting up the machine,” poker player and card house owner Doug Polk previously told WIRED. “If you’re showing up in a private game and there’s a shuffler, I would say you should run for the hills.”Hacking the Deckmate 2, according to prosecutors, was only one of several cheating techniques the mobsters allegedly used, albeit the one that’s described in the most detail in the indictment. The charging document also claims that they used…

The Trump administration’s investment in Intel appears to be paying off, but the once-mighty chipmaker has a long way to climb back to industry dominance. In August, the US government announced it was converting about $9 billion in federal grants that Intel had been issued during the Biden administration into a roughly 10 percent equity stake in the company. During its third-quarter earnings on Thursday—its first financial update since President Trump’s surprise investment—Intel reported that it earned $13.7 billion in revenue over the past three months, a 3 percent increase year-over-year. It’s the fourth consecutive quarter that Intel has beat revenue…
Researchers have developed an experimental method for determining whether the functions performed by a quantum computer are the result of quantum mechanics — or just a clever twist on classical physics. In a landmark study published April 22, 2025, in the journal Physical Review X, the researchers describe an experimental test that demonstrates and certifies computing activity that can only be achieved through quantum mechanics. This “quantum lie detector,” as the researchers described it, was created by reframing a famous test for quantum mechanics and engineering a purpose-built quantum computer trained to operate in ways that would be fundamentally impossible to achieve…
If you want to run faster or farther, you have options. You can put in the work, getting up 40 minutes earlier to train, changing your diet, going harder and longer on each of your runs to build up strength.Or, you can strap on one of Nike’s new robot shoes and mechanically boost your speed, your stamina, and your overall performance in a flash. Sounds way easier, and probably more fun too.Today the footwear giant unveiled Project Amplify, an early design of a powered footwear system that Nike technicians are still developing with the goal of a commercial release in…
