I will not give The Super Mario Galaxy Movie props for many things, but I will at least tip my hat to Illumination and Nintendo for not relying on fart jokes for cheap laughs like so many other animated films do. Does that mean Mario’s gassiest rival, Wario, is doomed to never appear in the big-screen adaptations? Not necessarily, according to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. In an interview with Japanese outlet Crank In, Miyamoto said that he had given actors like Chris Pratt, who plays Mario in the films, a rule to not use crude jokes. However, he says that…
Samsung The most common type of fainting called vasovagal syncope (VVS) is normally not dangerous in itself, but it can cause sudden falls that results in severe secondary injuries like concussions. Now, Samsung says that it has figured out how to predict VVS “with high accuracy” via biosignals from its Galaxy Watch 6. Such early warnings could allow users to get into a safe position or call for help. Samsung worked with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea to develop the new monitoring technique, as detailed in a European Heart Journal paper.…
During an energy forum on May 6, Taiwan’s Vice Minister of Economic Affairs said that the government had secured enough oil and gas supplies to operate normally through August and possibly September, according to Taiwan News. But the global energy crisis is also spurring the Taiwanese administration of President Lai Ching-te to accelerate efforts to develop fossil fuel alternatives, including restarting shuttered nuclear power plants and building out renewable power projects. Taiwan relies on imported fossil fuels to meet nearly 97 percent of its overall energy needs, including electricity, transport, and heating, according to the Global Taiwan Institute, a think…
Diablo 4 has been out for nearly three years, with two entire expansions under its belt. I admit I haven’t been paying super-close attention to it recently, and I just sort of assumed that it, like all the other Diablos, had a Secret Cow Level that players had discovered within a few weeks of launch and that everyone had promptly laughed about and moved on. I was surprised to discover, then, that said Secret Cow Level was actually just found yesterday. Diablo games have a long, storied history of cow levels. The idea of a cow level originated as a…
SAN FRANCISCO—At its Code with Claude developer conference on Wednesday, Anthropic announced a deal with SpaceX to utilize the entire compute capacity of the latter’s data center in Memphis, Tennessee. On stage at the conference, CEO Dario Amodei said the deal was intended to increase usage limits for Anthropic’s Pro and Max plan subscribers. The announcement was accompanied by an increase in those usage limits; Anthropic doubled Claude Code’s five-hour window limits for Pro and Max subscribers, removed the peak-hours limit reduction on Claude Code for those same accounts, and raised API limits for its Opus model. The table below…
It’s kind of crazy to think that Grand Theft Auto 6, the game so big it feels like business analysts are putting its success at the center of conversations on the longevity of the video game industry, was once supposed to be out in just a few weeks. Before Rockstar delayed the game to November 19, Grand Theft Auto 6 was supposed to be launching on May 26. The company then announced it wanted another six months to work on the game, and while fans were not happy about it, the company seems pretty confident it won’t slip once more.…
It is far too soon to mention retirement, but astute observers of the space industry have noticed SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket is not launching as often as it used to. The decline is modest so far, and it does not signal any problem at SpaceX or with the Falcon 9. Rather, it is a manifestation of SpaceX’s eagerness to shift focus to the much larger Starship rocket, an enabler of what the company wants to do in space: missions to land on the Moon and Mars, orbital data centers, and next-gen Starlink. Elon Musk’s SpaceX conducted 165 launches with…
The Maytag Man is one of the most enduring characters in American advertising, lonely because no one needs his help repairing a Maytag appliance. The Maytag brand, too, has endured—going back to the days when Frederick Maytag’s washers involved wooden tubs and cranks. Maytag was the first company to put an agitator at the bottom of a washing machine, a design still in use today, and it was the first to stack a washer and dryer, and one of the earliest adopters on smart appliances. But mostly, the brand has eschewed novelty and staked its claim on durability and reliability…
Neverness to Everness, the new open-world gacha game developed by Hotta Studio and published by Perfect World, released late last month on April 29, and things are already off to a rough start. While the hack-and-slash RPG is being praised for its generous gacha pull rates and its shiny graphics, dozens of examples of suspected generative-AI use for videos and art are dragging the otherwise positive reception down. The sentiment has now been amplified following the announcement that Twitch VTuber Ironmouse is pulling out of her sponsored Neverness to Everness streams, as she claims the developers lied to her about…
The Motley Fool is the O.G. stock and investment advice website, dating to the early days of the Internet when WIRED’s website was still called hotwired.com. Started as a tip sheet in the early ‘90s by brothers Tom and David Gardner, it rode a wave of hype to become a cult phenomenon viewed with equal interest and skepticism by the established investment class. Thirty years and a whole bunch of books later, The Motley Fool now feels like the established investment class, with a Stock Advisor subscription service offering stock tips that were shown in a 2017 study led by…
