The Motley Fool is the O.G. stock and investment advice website, dating to the early days of the Internet when WIRED’s website was still called hotwired.com. Started as a tip sheet in the early ‘90s by brothers Tom and David Gardner, it rode a wave of hype to become a cult phenomenon viewed with equal interest and skepticism by the established investment class. Thirty years and a whole bunch of books later, The Motley Fool now feels like the established investment class, with a Stock Advisor subscription service offering stock tips that were shown in a 2017 study led by…
As GameStop tries to buy eBay with $56 billion of fictional money, it’s also putting a lot of effort into pump its own profits by price-gouging customers on collectibles like trading cards. Today, the retailer came up with a brand new way to do that: selling single, randomized, PSA-graded Pokémon cards for $5,000 a pop. This unhinged behavior went live on GameStop’s website today as part of its “Power Packs” program. Power Packs have been live for several months now as part of a collaboration with card-grading site PSA, allowing customers to spend a flat amount of money to “rip”…
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is facing protests against its expected initial public offering from some of the same advocacy groups that helped erase $600 billion from Tesla’s market cap early last year.SpaceX’s IPO is poised to be the largest ever, raising tens of billions of dollars for the Musk-founded company and valuing it above $2 trillion. If all goes as intended come June, the conglomerate that now owns a rocket manufacturer, a social media app, and an AI chatbot developer will instantly rank among the world’s top 10 largest publicly-traded companies. On Wednesday, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers,…
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was one of the big surprises during last year’s Gamescom: Opening Night Live showcase. Not only is it mechanically a pretty big departure from the usual fare of Traveller’s Tales’ Lego games, but it also kind of seems like a follow-up to the Arkham games that we’ve been lacking for over a decade. The game’s nearly here, so let’s break down everything we know so far. The obvious Arkham influence Legacy of the Dark Knight draws heavily from Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games. Like those games, it takes place in an open-world Gotham with…
Hasan Piker spends seven to eight hours a day, seven days a week, streaming on Twitch. The far-left political commentator got his start in 2013 interning for (and sometimes hosting) the Young Turks. More than a decade later, he’s a powerhouse newsfluencer with the number-one channel in Twitch’s Politics and Commentary category. More than 3 million people follow him for his takes and humor on the crumbling American empire, foreign policy, and why Bernie would have won. He is also considered, by some, very hot. Piker works out every available morning and eats 1 pound of chicken with some rice…
Borderlands 4 was supposed to be one of the Switch 2’s big launch-year third-party ports. Instead, it was delayed at the last minute and is currently on pause. Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said releasing the game on Switch 2 is “doable,” but the Nintendo platform still isn’t one of the “primary” consoles the Gearbox Entertainment owner is worried about. “We want to be wherever the consumer is, and we’ve supported Switch 2,” Zelnick said in a new interview with Game File. “You can tell from what we are doing and what we’re not doing that our primary console platforms…
Other Leak Detectors We LikePhotograph: Simon HillShelly Flood Gen 4: Shelly’s fourth-generation leak detector boasts support for the Matter smart home system and impressive connectivity via Zigbee, Bluetooth, and dual-band Wi-Fi. I had no issues setting it up in my Google Home app by scanning the Matter QR code, but you can also use the Shelly app or your smart home ecosystem of choice (Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings). Each IP44-rated unit requires four AA batteries (included), and you stick or screw it to the wall (so there’s no risk of the unit being submerged), and plug the extendable…
A few minutes ago, I completed and published an article about GameStop’s new basically-gambling scheme that lets people pay $5000 for a random Pokémon card that has a slim chance of being worth more than that, and a high chance of being worth less. I, like a number of other journalists, suggested half-jokingly in the text that GameStop was doing this to raise money toward purchasing e-commerce giant eBay, a website it wants to buy but seemingly cannot afford. Before our article even hit the feeds, I received a bizarre email from GameStop Director of Communications Nicolle Robles. The subject…
I watched Avatar: Fire and Ash using the Fandango at Home app, and in one scene, there’s an alarm chime during an attack sequence that fills the room. A main character is running out of oxygen, and you can hear the warning beeps move from the side to the center. Even when I watched Crime 101 using the Amazon Prime app, the droning synths and pounding drums sounded ultrarealistic, even compared to my own floor-standing speakers. All good so far, but I will be curious to get my hands on the LG Sound Suite speakers, because they are the first…
Energizer Coin batteries don’t make headlines all that often, but today shifts that trend with a smart new development. Energizer has released a new Ultimate Child Shield version of its 20mm coin lithium batteries. As the name implies, the tech is aimed at reducing the number of health risks if a child accidentally swallows the battery. These coin batteries don’t cause burning in the esophagus if ingested, and they also contain a dye that will color a child’s mouth blue if it comes in contact with saliva. According to Energizer’s…
