Iryna Tolmachova/Shutterstock Philippe Dufresne, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, has found OpenAI was “not compliant with” Canadian federal and provincial privacy laws in the training of its AI models. Following an investigation, Dufresne and his counterparts in Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia say OpenAI’s approach to things like data collection and consent stepped on multiple laws, including Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which governs how companies collect and use personal information during the normal course of business. The commissioners participating in the investigation identified multiple privacy…
Meta is beefing up its age-verification mechanisms with an AI system that analyzes images and videos on Instagram and Facebook for “visual cues,” such as height and bone structure, to identify and delete accounts of users under the age of 13. The company announced the move amid a wave of cases in which hundreds of children have managed to evade social network access restrictions, even through simple tricks such as drawing on a mustache. The new approach is part of a series of measures Meta adopted as part of an AI-based security strategy designed to correct the limitations of traditional methods,…
Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were the Coke and Pepsi of fighting games in the ’90s. I don’t know why we pitched them against one another. Maybe adopting the console war language of Nintendo vs. Sega was the easiest way for young minds to analogize the differences between the Capcom fighter and its U.S.-developed counterpart. The simultaneous arrival of new Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat live-action movies has revived the feud, and the co-creator of the latter seems to think that’s just fine. One of the Street Fighter movie cast members took a shot at Mortal Kombat at the 2026…
Build a Rocket Boy Around 170 staff have reportedly been laid off Build a Rocket Boy, the developer behind the unendingly troubled MindsEye. According to Kotaku, the exact number of people affected is unclear, but the latest round off staff cuts brings the Scotland-based studio’s headcount down to approximately 80. There’s been no official announcement regarding the layoffs from BARB at the time of writing (Engadget has reached out to the studio for comment and we’ll update this post if and when we receive one), but as Kotaku points out,…
Mexico City is one of the fastest sinking cities in the world. Now, a powerful satellite from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) confirms the accelerated advance of this silent threat that puts nearly 20 million people at risk. The satellite designed by NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), known as NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), was able to capture with unprecedented precision the magnitude and evolution of this phenomenon in different areas of the Mexican capital. The analysis is based on preliminary measurements taken from space between October 2025 and January of this year, during the…
In her song “PROFIT,” Doechii says, “They don’t make statues of critics, they don’t make statues of fans.” Doechii didn’t win a Grammy by catering to the whims of her label or her followers—a recurring theme throughout the album Alligator Bites Never Heal is Doechii’s commitment to her artistic pursuit, despite the fluctuating support of the people around her. Doechii knows that you can’t please everybody, and attempting to do so will only hold you back from making great art. A common refrain in video game spaces is the importance of player feedback. Obviously, quality assurance and bug fixing are…
Yacht Club Games We’ve been waiting quite some time to find out when we’ll finally be able to get our hands on Mina the Hollower, so a fresh release date is welcome news. Yacht Club Games is bringing its latest project to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 29 for $20. That’s within the spring release window the developer previously announced. Mina the Hollower is an action-adventure game with an 8-bit aesthetic in the vein of Game Boy Color titles. Yacht Club says…
President Donald Trump’s negotiators face the arduous task of trying to convince the president that a deal he previously rejected is their best option in Iran.Last month, Trump initially gave his blessing for a so-called “cash for uranium” deal, under which the US would release around $20 billion in frozen funds in exchange for Iran handing over its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, sources familiar with the matter tell WIRED.Trump’s negotiators, vice president JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son in law, received repeated approvals from the president while they were in Islamabad, giving them confidence…
Not to be a downer, but I am tired of friendslop games. The friendslop formula, known for things like comical co-op gameplay and proximity chat, has been diluted by an onslaught of too many games since the release of PEAK, and it seems like every single weekend I’m begged to buy a $5 game with a very corny gimmick that my friends and I will play for maybe two hours before it rots in our Steam libraries forever. A lot of these recent games have felt meaningless to me, which I guess is the point sometimes—it is called friendslop, after…
Jetcityimage/Getty Images Google is updating AI Overviews and AI Mode, the AI-generated portions of its search engine, to highlight sources in new ways, and interestingly, more prominently feature first-hand accounts from forums, social media and Reddit. Via a new “Expert Advice” section that can appear in AI responses, Google will display “a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media and other firsthand sources.” In the sample screenshot the company provided, quotes from forums, WordPress blogs and Reddit were arranged above links to their respective sources. Google plans to add more context to these links,…
