In this new picture from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, a spiral galaxy glittering with star clusters is the center of attention. NGC 3137 is located 53 million light-years away in the constellation Antlia (the Air Pump). As a nearby spiral galaxy, this target offers astronomers an excellent opportunity to study the cycle of stellar birth and death, as well as giving researchers a glimpse of a galactic system similar to our own. NGC 3137 is of particular interest to astronomers because it travels through space with a group of galaxies that is thought to be similar to the Local Group, the galaxy group…
RGG Studio / YouTube We’ll soon know much more about Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s upcoming Yakuza-like epic, Stranger Than Heaven. On Wednesday, Xbox is hosting a deep dive with developers and cast on the upcoming action-adventure game. The roughly half-hour event will add “details and insights on the game’s story, world, characters, and more.” We already know that Stranger Than Heaven will cover five cities across five eras: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. The ’60s time period appears to take place in Kamurocho, the fictional Tokyo district from the…
The Department of Homeland Security tried to obtain a Canadian man’s location information, activity logs, and other identifying information from Google after he criticized the Trump administration online following the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis early this year.Lawyers for the man, who has not been named, are alarmed in part because they say that the man has not entered the United States in more than a decade. “I don’t know what the government knows about our client’s residence, but it’s clear that the government isn’t stopping to find out,” says Michael Perloff,…
Public sentiment around generative AI has been tanking as of late, and few corners of the internet hate the controversial technology more than gamers. So Gearbox Entertainment studio head Randy Pitchford had some explaining to do when he recently shared AI slop on main. In response to Borderlands 4 fans’ displeasure, he unofficially outlined the studio’s guidelines on using AI, including a ban on using it for anything that might end up in one of its games. “ChatGPT has no information from me about anything from my work because I don’t use AI for work and our policy is no…
A study of NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) data on stellar pairs undergoing mutual eclipses has uncovered more than two dozen candidate exoplanets, or worlds beyond our solar system. This method allows the mission to locate planets it couldn’t otherwise detect. To date, TESS has discovered 885 confirmed exoplanets and identified more than 7,900 candidates, nearly all found because the planets pass in front of their stars from our perspective. These events, called transits, produce a small, regular dip in the brightness of the planet’s host star. TESS also observes tens of thousands of eclipsing binary stars — two…
We’re all too familiar with the notch—the unsightly cut-in that graced many smartphones for years, like the iPhone X or the LG G7.The notch has largely been replaced on today’s smartphones by floating punch-hole cameras that take up less space and look a little more futuristic, though notches are still prevalent on some laptops, like Apple’s MacBooks. On the iPhone, Apple calls its floating pill-shaped camera system the Dynamic Island, which debuted on the iPhone 14. The iPhone still has the largest camera cutout today, due to its Face ID biometric authentication system. (Barring Google Pixel phones, the vast majority of…
I fully expected Saros to become a talking point in the manufactured culture war when I played through Housemarque’s latest shooter, but I didn’t realize that grifters would stoop to bending the truth and using AI-generated images to gin up their latest rage-bait cycle. We can’t really get into what’s going on and why it’s dishonest without getting into spoilers, so if you’re still fighting your way through Carcosa, come back to this after you’re done. Or don’t! It might save you some psychic damage. The earliest example I could find of the Saros misinformation campaign has been deleted, but…
On May 4, 1976, a spacecraft resembling a disco ball entered orbit almost 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) above Earth. This shiny, two‑foot‑wide (60‑centimeter) sphere called the Laser Geodynamics Satellite, or LAGEOS, is covered with 426 retroreflectors—small mirrored prisms designed to bounce laser light directly back to where it came from. Beneath its aluminum exterior sits a dense brass core that makes LAGEOS incredibly heavy (900 pounds or 400 kilograms) for its size. That weight was intentional. The satellite’s high mass and compact, spherical design allow it to follow an exceptionally stable orbit, perfect for satellite laser ranging. From stations around…
Meta Instagram is taking a small step toward increasing transparency around AI-generated content on the service. The app is testing a new account-level label that will allow creators to self-identify as an “AI creator.” The label will appear prominently both in creators’ profiles and alongside their posts and Reels elsewhere in the app. “This profile posts content that was generated or modified with AI,” it says. According to Meta, the new labels are an effort to “raise the bar on AI transparency on Instagram.” And the language in the new…
Summer is right around the corner. We’re headed out on adventures and bringing our stuff with us. Here are all the tech and tips that WIRED Reviews recommends for your travels. In 2015, I ran the Marathon Des Sables. You know, that race across the Sahara where people wear funny flappy sun hats and gaiters, and carry everything they need to survive (except a tent) on their backs. A week spent battling the giant dunes and the blistering, dried up rocky river beds taught me an important lesson: It’s possible to pack your life into a 10-lb pack and run big…
