OpenAI, the company that developed the models and products associated with ChatGPT, plans to announce a new audio language model in the first quarter of 2026, and that model will be an intentional step along the way to an audio-based physical hardware device, according to a report in The Information. Citing a variety of sources familiar with the plans, including both current and former employees, The Information claims that OpenAI has taken efforts to combine multiple teams across engineering, product, and research under one initiative focused on improving audio models, which researchers in the company believe lag behind the models…
Smart fridges are a dime a dozen at CES, and LG and Samsung have thoroughly explored what’s possible when you connect your fridge to the internet or slap a touchscreen on the front. The new GE Profile Smart Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant GE is announcing ahead of CES 2026 doesn’t reinvent the wheel in that regard, but it does include a first: a built-in barcode scanner for adding items to your shopping list.GE’s “Scan-to-List” feature uses the barcode scanner to quickly (and precisely) add items to a shareable shopping list in GE’s SmartHQ app. You can refer to that list…

It’s a classic Disney moment: Dumbo the elephant jumps out of a burning building, spreads out his huge ears and flies. While real life elephants can’t fly, they certainly have enormous ears. The African elephant, for instance, has the largest ears of any animal. Their ears can grow up to 6.6 feet long and 4.11 feet wide, making up 20% of their body’s total surface area. But why are elephants’ ears so large? It’s nothing to do with flying, of course. Elephant ears play a vital…
The first free monthly PlayStation Plus games for paying subscribers in 2026 have been revealed and it’s a sleepy month for PS5 and PS4 players. There are also only three additions for this month, compared to last month’s five. On December 31, Sony revealed the first batch of PS Plus Essential games coming this year and while they’re decent games, none of the picks make a big splash. These games will be available to add to your PlayStation library permanently beginning on January 6. Once added, you can install them and play them whenever you want as long as you…
With CES 2026 slated to officially start next week, the focus is understandably on all the new products that will be announced at this year’s event. But before diving into what’s new, we thought it was a good idea to revisit our best of show winners from last year to see where they’re at. After all, CES is synonymous with vaporware. The good news is the Engadget team has a keen sense for BS. Of the ones we awarded at CES 2025 that haven’t been released, most are coming this year. For the remaining few, we’ll be hunting them down this CES.ASUS…
A small section of the International Space Station that has experienced persistent leaks for years appears to have stopped venting atmosphere into space. The leaks were caused by microscopic structural cracks inside the small PrK module on the Russian segment of the space station, which lies between a Progress spacecraft airlock and the Zvezda module. The problem has been a long-running worry for Russian and US operators of the station, especially after the rate of leakage doubled in 2024. This prompted NASA officials to label the leak as a “high likelihood” and “high consequence” risk. However, recently two sources indicated…

While we’ve said goodbye to both the year 2025 and the penny, five new United States quarters will be finding their way into your pocket soon enough. The designs of each new quarter will honor the country’s 250th anniversary (aka its semiquincentennial). According to a press release from the U.S. Mint, the coins “commemorate 250 years of American Liberty by reflecting our country’s founding principles and honoring our Nation’s history.” They will only be available this year, which almost assuredly means they will be collector’s items…
Samsung is arguably the 800-pound gorilla of CES, with a full spectrum of products that range from phones and computers to refrigerators, AI assistants and rolling robots. But for CES 2026, the company is switching things up a bit: Instead of its longtime midday Monday press conference, the Korean giant will take the lead of the show with a Sunday night presentation.Over the past few weeks, Samsung has been dropping hints about what’s on the agenda, but what we’re really hoping to see is an update on the Ballie robot — a star of previous CES presentations that ostensibly missed…
The year 2025 ended with more than 14,000 active satellites from all nations zooming around the Earth. One-third of them will soon move to lower altitudes. The maneuvers will be undertaken by SpaceX, the owner of the largest satellite fleet in orbit. About 4,400 of the company’s Starlink Internet satellites will move from an altitude of 341 miles (550 kilometers) to 298 miles (480 kilometers) over the course of 2026, according to Michael Nicolls, SpaceX’s vice president of Starlink engineering. “Starlink is beginning a significant reconfiguration of its satellite constellation focused on increasing space safety,” Nicolls wrote Thursday in a…
Hackers and jailbreakers are god’s strongest soldiers. What do you mean y’all discovered that a PS4 port of a relatively obscure Star Wars game is the key to hacking the PlayStation 5? Bizarre as it is, that’s apparently the case, and PS5 jailbreakers are now trying to track down the limited number of physical copies of Star Wars Racer Revenge to crack the console open, with the price of the game going up significantly since the news broke. As Resell Calendar outlines, PS5 hackers believe they’ve found a jailbreak for the system’s upcoming 12.00 system update, but the developers behind…
