AT&T sued California yesterday over the state’s refusal to let the carrier stop providing phone service to all potential customers in its wireline network territory. AT&T is also asking the Federal Communications Commission to declare that California cannot enforce its rules and to let AT&T stop providing service to about 199,000 phone customers. “California requires AT&T to spend $1 billion each year to maintain a century-old telephone network that almost no one uses,” AT&T said in a lawsuit filed in US District Court for the Southern District of California. “The copper wires that once served every home now serve just…
AT&T is a very old company. It started as the Bell Telephone Company in 1877, founded by Alexander Graham Bell, the man credited with inventing the telephone. Just a year earlier, Graham had invented the telephone, and by 1899 the company merged with its American Telephone and Telegraph long-distance subsidiary.AT&T is forced to spend $1 billion a year to keep up a copper wire phone service in CaliforniaIn his wildest dreams, Bell could never have imagined what his invention would evolve into. 30 years ago, no one could have forecast that by 2026, as many as 79.1% of U.S. households…
Earlier this month, I got to play the upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake. It’s really good, and I’m excited to play more of it. But I also got to chat with the leads behind this big project, and I wanted to ask them about how the franchise now includes big RPG entries as well as more focused action-adventure romps. Is the plan to keep making RPG sequels? Action-adventure only sequels? Or can both types of Assassin’s Creed games exist moving forward? I mentioned to game director Richard Knight and creative director Paul Fu that I’d noted how they’d…
Corporate use of Anthropic’s Claude and the Google Gemini AI models has also soared in the past year, according to the market research firm Enterprise Technology Research. The firm’s survey of 500 people—also highlighted by The Wall Street Journal—showed reported Claude usage among respondents’ companies jumping from 21 percent to 48 percent between 2025 and 2026. Similarly, reported Gemini usage rose from 27 percent to 40 percent in the same time period. Grok’s corporate usage also saw a smaller bump, rising from 4 percent to 7 percent. “We have launched Grok Business, Grok Enterprise, Grok API, and xAI Gov, products…
AI is radically changing how carriers manage their networks. But not all the action is happening behind the scenes, as T-Mobile is finally launching the Live Translation beta. One of the more helpful uses of AIAI may not have completely transformed how you interact with your smartphone just yet, but T-Mobile is using the tech to upgrade what its network can do for you. As John Saw, T-Mobile’s President of Technology and CTO, notes, 60 million American households are multilingual. Moreover, the company’s customers make over 6 billion international calls every year, and around 40% of its subscribers travel abroad. The company doesn’t…
Keeping both apps not “sustainable” Online complaints suggest that AcuRite has customers who are content with My AcuRite’s capabilities. However, maintaining the app long-term isn’t sustainable for AcuRite, Bovee said. “The technology behind My AcuRite is obsolete and can no longer be maintained,” he said. AcuRite is declining to maintain two apps in order to save money but also due to “long-term supportability,” the executive said. “Even if [My AcuRite] continues to function for many users, the underlying systems require ongoing maintenance, updates, hosting, monitoring, security support, and compatibility work as phones, operating systems, cloud services, and third-party integrations continue…
Destiny 2 will get its final update in June, closing out the latest chapter in Bungie’s long-running sci-fi MMO. For players who have been playing since the original Destiny came to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One back in 2014, it’s hard to believe. Everything ends eventually, but Destiny 2‘s end feels like it came earlier than it needed to. Many Guardians ended their journeys when Bungie switched from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2 in 2017. Another wave of players were left behind amid the loot shooter’s various stumbles over the ensuing years. Many felt The Final Shape in 2024, which…
Every few months a quirky phone shows up promising to fix our relationship with screens, and most of them arrive already a step behind. The Clicks Communicator just made a move that suggests it actually gets the assignment. What Clicks just told pre-order holdersIn an email that went out to reservation holders this morning (May 21), the company behind the BlackBerry-style keyboard phone shared two updates, according to a new report. The bigger one is software. The Communicator will now launch on Android 17, not the Android 16 the company had been listing since CES. With a Q4 release on the calendar,…
SpaceX got within 40 seconds of launching the first flight of a taller, more powerful version of its Starship rocket Thursday, but a pesky problem with the launch tower kept the vehicle bound to Earth for at least one more day. Clouds and rain showers cleared the area around SpaceX’s launch site in South Texas, leaving mostly sunny skies over the Starship launch pad Thursday afternoon. SpaceX pushed back the launch time by one hour, but the countdown appeared to proceed smoothly once propellants began loading into the rocket. That was true, at least, until the countdown clock paused 40…
We’ve known that a new Virtua Fighter game is on its way for some time now, and we even got our first proper glimpse at it during the 2024 Game Awards. However, even calling what we saw a “glimpse” might be generous and, at the time, it was simply called “New Virtua Fighter Project.” A newly leaked snippet of a seemingly much longer trailer has just found its way online, though, and it looks like developers Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are cooking up something special. The leaked trailer somehow found its way onto Bilibili in the very early hours of…
