Archaeologists have recovered a rare 2,000-year-old war trumpet in England that may have been used in Queen Boudica’s wars against the Romans. The battle trumpet, also known as a carnyx, was part of a hoard of metal artifacts discovered ahead of residential construction in West Norfolk last year. The hoard was announced Wednesday (Jan. 7) by Pre-Construct Archaeology, the company that led the original excavation, and Historic England, the organization that is coordinating the research and conservation efforts.Artifacts in the hoard include the nearly complete animal-headed battle trumpet; a boar-headed military standard, or a decorated pole that identified a group of…

If you’ve been following last year’s smart ring drama, you may have seen that the number of health-tracking rings you can buy has shrunk since October 21, 2025.As we reported in August, the US International Trade Commission ruled in favor of Oura in a patent case in which Oura alleged that its competitors RingConn and Ultrahuman had infringed on the company’s patent for a smart ring that tracks health and fitness stats. Oura’s victory subsequently led to RingConn and Ultrahuman being banned from importing new rings into the US.The lawsuit was bad news for both Oura competitors, and especially Ultrahuman,…
As power gets more dicey, personal energy generation only gets more appealing. Shine’s compact turbine isn’t going to power your house any time soon (though the company’s co-founder told me they have plans in that direction) but it can suck up the energy required to refill a smartphone in as little as 17 minutes. Of course, what it can generate depends on wind speed. That same charge could take as long as 11 hours if there’s only a slight breeze. That power curve, and its ability to operate at night, sets the turbine apart from solar panels. Of course, on a…
Consoles used to come in fun colors, sometimes with transparent shells and other wild features. Those days are long gone, and now we mostly get stuck with black and white consoles with a few limited color options for accessories. So I’m happy to see Sony announcing some genuinely cool-looking console covers and controllers for the PlayStation 5 arriving in March. On January 7, PlayStation unveiled its Hyperpop Collection, which features three vibrant new PS5 console covers and controllers. You can get a PS5 shell or Dualsense gamepad in Techno Red, Remix Green, and/or Rhythm Blue. Silly names aside, these console…
Scientists say they may have extracted Leonardo da Vinci’s DNA from a Renaissance-era drawing for the very first time. The trace DNA, embedded in a red chalk sketch called the “Holy Child” that some claim was made by da Vinci, shows similarities with genetic material recovered from a letter penned in the 1400s by Frosino di ser Giovanni da Vinci, a cousin of Leonardo da Vinci’s grandfather, Antonio da Vinci.Specifically, the drawing and the letter contain Y chromosome sequences that match those of a haplogroup, or genetic lineage, with a common ancestor in Tuscany, where Leonardo da Vinci was born. The…
A startup called ReviMo has developed a robotic system that provides a way for people with limited mobility to lift and transfer themselves — like from a bed to a wheelchair, or to the toilet — without the assistance of a caregiver. ReviMo’s Niko has two sets of arms: one that forms a “scooping seat” that slides underneath the person to lift them up, and the other encircling their torso and providing a backrest. It can be operated both by remote and using the controls on its dashboard. Niko in its current iteration can carry up to 250 pounds, but…
In the days following the kidnapping of Venezuela president Nicolás Maduro, members of the Pentagon’s new right-wing influencer press corps weren’t reporting on the operation. Instead, they were enforcing loyalty in a manner similar to the Iraq war bloggers of the early 2000s.On Monday, Laura Loomer tried to crowdsource information on Pentagon press officials who may have leaked information to the mainstream media. “The White House account better be cooking up a sick edit,” Cam Higby, a right-wing influencer and member of the Pentagon press corps, wrote on X Saturday morning, as news of Maduro’s arrest broke. Monica Paige, a…
The case between Rockstar and fired Grand Theft Auto 6 developers who were unionizing gets messier. Discord is secretly preparing for a possible IPO. And Square Enix might ban you if you share Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined spoilers. It’s the latest edition of Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku‘s daily roundup of gaming news and culture. I’m trying to go into this new year by once again limiting my social media intake. There are a lot of cool things that get shared around and I love to see, and also too much of anything will kill you. Curated feeds. Strict time limits. This…
The 9,500-year-old remains of a woman in Malawi have set a new record, marking Africa’s oldest evidence of intentional cremation, as well as the earliest known cremation pyre for an adult that is still “in situ,” or in its original position, a new study finds. The pyre is located at a hunter-gatherer burial ground at the foot of Mount Hora in Malawi, where the burials date to between 8,000 and 16,000 years ago. The pyre is the only known cremation at the site. The analysis of 170 bone fragments from the cremated individual indicated that she stood less than 5 feet…
