Privacy isn’t dead. Just ask Kristi Noem. The Department of Homeland Security secretary has spent 2025 trying to convince the American public that identifying roving bands of masked federal agents is “doxing”—and that revealing these public servants’ identities is “violence.” Noem is wrong on both fronts, legal experts say, but her claims of doxing highlight a central conflict in the current era: Surveillance now goes both ways.Over the nearly 12 months since President Donald Trump took office for a second time, life in the United States has been torn asunder by relentless arrests and raids by officers from Immigration and Customs…

In 2024 we emitted more greenhouse gases into our atmosphere in a single year than any year before it. The increase from 2023 was small—0.8 percent—but still, global emissions continue to rise, despite science telling us we should have bent the global emissions’ curve downward by 2020.The emissions in our atmosphere are at work, heating the planet, acidifying our oceans, and leading to climate-fueled disasters: heat waves, fires, flooding, droughts, and storms. For some climate impacts, devastation can be followed by the painstaking work of recovery. But for many natural systems, like our tropical coral reefs, the stress we are…
Peak Design’s iPhone tripod is a solid, well-designed aluminum frame that folds into a credit card-sized shape. You’re paying a premium for the build design and quality, with a tiny hex key even built into the tripod legs for tightening them, if needed. With a solid micro-ball head, you can adjust the angle of your iPhone while it’s in tripod mode. Better still, it can firmly attach, magnetically, to the phone in both vertical and horizontal orientations. This makes it an excellent stand for your phone even when you’re not trying to shoot video or photos. You also don’t need…

Realme has released official camera samples from the upcoming Realme 16 Pro+ 5G ahead of its India launch on January 6. These images offer a clear look at how the phone’s camera system performs in real-world shooting conditions, especially for portraits. The samples focus heavily on people photography and show consistent results across different lighting setups. Skin tones appear natural and even, without heavy smoothing or sharpness. Fine details such as facial texture, jewelry, and fabric patterns are preserved well, indicating controlled image processing rather than aggressive tuning. Highlights on skin and metallic surfaces are handled cleanly, without visible clipping.…
Milestone: Vision of nanotechnology laid outDate: Dec. 29, 1959Where: Pasadena, CaliforniaWho: Richard FeynmanOn a December day, Richard Feynman gave a fun little lecture at Caltech — and dreamed up an entirely new field of physics.During the talk, entitled “Plenty of room at the bottom,” he described the enormous potential that could be realized if scientists could manipulate and control things at a “small scale.”How small? Feynman went on to discount advances of the time, such as writing the Lord’s Prayer on the head of a pin, as trivial. You may like “But that’s nothing; that’s the most primitive, halting step…
