What would you do if you walked into Costco and saw a killer gaming PC on the shelf for just $1,100? Would you be willing to spend the smallest fraction of that—five bucks—to try Warren Spector’s new game, Thick as Thieves? And what would you want to see in a third Injustice game? Welcome to Kotaku‘s Checkpoint for April 29, 2026. This is Carolyn, once again covering intro duty for Ethan who had to run off to a meeting before saying hello to all of you. I apologize on his behalf. As for my own financial decisions, I’m not sold on Thick as Thieves yet…
Just days after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote a public apology to people of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia in the aftermath of the town’s deadly February 10 school shooting, the families of the victims of the traumatic event are suing OpenAI for negligence. The mass shooting, one of the deadliest in Canadian history, saw the alleged shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, enter the town’s local high school and kill five students and one teacher, as well as critically injure two others, before taking her own life. Local police later discovered Van Rootselaar had also killed her mother and 11-year-old half-brother…

Let Someone Else Beta Test Windows Update Patches Microsoft are improving your Windows Update experience in four ways, unfortunately none of them are improved testing to ensure they don’t regularly release updates which bork your PC. Instead they will add a new option to the Windows Update screen which lets you pause the installation of Windows Updates to a specific date in the future. This should hopefully ensure that any bad updates are fixed before that date, though one hopes the user can’t just pick a date in 2099 to prevent any updates from ever installing. In addition to pausing Windows…
The risk of malaria influenced where prehistoric people lived in sub-Saharan Africa, a new study suggests. The research is the first to link early human habitation with the deadly disease and contrasts with early assumptions that prehistoric people migrated to different regions mainly for agricultural reasons. In the study, researchers analyzed existing models of climate and environmental data that indicate where malaria was likely prevalent, and compared it with maps of early human settlements. They found that prehistoric humans seem to have avoided regions where malaria was endemic long before the introduction of farming in sub-Saharan Africa between about 3000 and 1000…
Steam might be a great storefront for saving money when big sales roll around, but based on the fact that many users have heaps of games that languish unplayed in their libraries for ages, it’s also a great storefront for wasting money. A solo developer has decided to transform this fact into the most meta game about games I think I’ve ever seen, as Nic Taylor’s upcoming indie game Game Quest: The Backlog Battler will allow you to fight your unplayed games in a gladiatorial arena. This one has taken the internet by storm recently, as several posts have started…
SenseTime, a Chinese AI company best known for its facial recognition technology, released a new open source model on Tuesday that it claims can both generate and interpret images far faster than top models developed by US competitors. SenseNova U1 could help the company reclaim lost ground after it slipped from its place among the leading players in China’s AI development race. The model’s secret sauce is its ability to “read” images without translating them to text first, speeding up the process and reducing the amount of computing power required. “The model’s entire reasoning process is no longer limited to text.…
Maybe? Creative Assembly released a teaser which looks like it is for Alien Isolation 2; sans Aliens or really any context but for one horror inspiring asset which you are now looking at. The trailer video is called False Sense Of Security and was uploaded to the Alien: Isolation Youtube channel so we can be pretty sure that it is Alien Isolation 2 regardless of how cute CA is being. It also looks like you’ve got a lot more space to deal with, with a door opening to reveal a large outdoor area for you to be stalked in. There…
NASA’s Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation (CoECI) assists in the use of crowdsourcing across the federal government. CoECI’s NASA Tournament Lab offers the contract capability to run external crowdsourced challenges on behalf of NASA and other agencies. The Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), within the Executive Office of the President established by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in 1970, consults and coordinates with federal agencies, providing guidance on the implementation of NEPA to ensure timely environmental review and permitting processes across the Federal government Technology solutions could accelerate and modernize environmental review and permitting by connecting data, systems,…
I’ve seen plenty of horrifying things in my life, but this latest unnerving sight is gonna haunt me for a while. The sight of billionaires existing is bad enough on its own, but I think seeing hyper-realistic mockups of their faces attached to photo-shitting robot dogs might be worse? Artist Mike “Beeple” Winklmann has created an installation at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalarie that has robot dogs walking around the museum and pooping out printed photos of their surroundings taken with a camera inside. However, what really elevates them to nightmare fuel territory is that they also have silicone heads attached that…
