Xbox held an ID@Xbox showcase today to put forward a bunch of trailers for indie games that are coming to its console, and at times Game Pass, in the coming year. The showcase overall was solid, with a healthy mix of new reveals and trailers for stuff we’ve seen before, and more games to show than I initially expected. Xbox’s initial marketing for this whole affair focused on somewhat bigger indie game names like Mistfall Hunter and Aphelion, but there were plenty of standouts beyond just Xbox’s chosen highlights for the show. You should probably go watch the entire showcase…

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first-ever gene therapy for inherited deafness. The therapy, called Otarmeni, is approved to treat a form of hearing loss caused by mutations in the OTOF gene, which codes for a protein called otoferlin. Cells in the inner ear need otoferlin to translate vibrations into signals that can be interpreted by the brain. When people carry two defective copies of the OTOF gene — one from each parent — this line of communication between the inner ear and brain is cut, resulting in severe-to-profound hearing loss.Otarmeni is a one-time treatment that uses…

Instagram is notorious for blatantly copying features from some of the most popular apps to improve its own product. So far, that has mostly worked, but its latest app is unlikely to stay around very long.Instagram launched Instants on iOS and AndroidInstagram launched another copycat app called Instants. Available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the app transfers the “Shots” functionality from the message section of Instagram to a separate experience. Instants is designed to quickly share in-the-moment photos with your friends and doesn’t allow users to upload photos from the camera roll or any editing. The…

Instead, Kamluk saw that it was a self-spreading piece of code with very different intentions. Using what was referred to within the code as “wormlet” functionality, Fast16 is designed to copy itself to other computers on the network via Windows’ network share feature. It checks for a list of security applications, and if none are present, installs the Fast16.sys kernel driver on the target machine. That kernel driver then reads the code of applications as they’re loaded into the computer’s memory, monitoring for a long list of specific patterns—“rules” that allow it to identify when a target application is running. When…

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, a widely used international environmental standard for measuring and reporting emissions, is considering changes to how certain types of the emissions are reported. Advocates for the new guidance argue that the current rules make it too easy for businesses to overstate their commitments to environmentally friendly operations, such as being powered by renewable energy or making progress toward net-zero emissions.Today, some major tech companies joined a call pushing back against the new guidance, asking for the new reporting rules to be optional rather than required. The joint statement argued that the proposed policies would reduce investments…

After a lot of past leaks, rumors, and reports, Ubisoft has officially revealed Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a complete remake of the original Black Flag. Built using Ubisoft’s latest version of its in-house Anvil engine, this upcoming remake looks great. But when you compare it directly against the original 13-year-old game, Resynced looks even better. On April 23, Ubisoft released a ton of screenshots and gameplay of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which is set to arrive on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on July 9. During the initial reveal, Ubisoft showcased some direct splitscreen comparisons of the original and…

While I wouldn’t typically advise you to buy a device like the Razr (2025) just a little over a week before the Razr (2026) family is officially unveiled in the US, the things I’ve recently heard about Motorola’s upcoming foldables make me quite confident you won’t regret choosing an “old” model right now.And as hard as it might be to resist getting the super-premium Razr Ultra (2025) at a massive $700 discount in a top-of-the-line 1TB storage variant, I think you should strongly consider doing just that and picking up a “vanilla” Razr (2025) instead… at its regular price. Gift…

In a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) directly confronted anti-vaccine Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his rejection of germ theory—the unquestionable scientific idea that specific pathogenic microbes cause specific diseases. After Kennedy defended his fringe view, Senator Bill Cassidy fact-checked and debunked Kennedy’s denialist arguments in real time. The exchanges mark a rare instance in which Kennedy’s dismissal of germ theory has been raised in such a high-profile public setting, in this case, a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Kennedy, who has no background in science, medicine, or public…

X is closing its Communities feature in May, X Head of Product Nikita Bier has announced. Communities were introduced before Twitter was acquired and rebranded by Elon Musk, and act as a way for users to create, join and moderate public groups focused on a particular interest. Communities make it possible to follow a feed made up of only the people or subject matter you care about, but they haven’t been used at the scale the social platform wanted.”Communities had a great vision, but they were used by less than 0.4% of users — yet contributed to 80% of spam…
