Using a diverse array of datasets, a team at the Technical University of Munich released GlobalBuildingAtlas, the first high-resolution mapping model featuring every structure in the world at a given point in time. However, the open-source project isn’t about bragging rights. With over 2.75 billion buildings detailed in the map, the endeavor will help create accurate analyses of urban structures, volume calculations, and infrastructure planning around the planet. “3D building information provides a much more…
The holidays are winding down. Did you get what you wanted? If not and you own a Switch or Switch 2, there’s a still a chance you can treat yourself to something for a decent price. Some of the best games of the year are currently on sale on the eShop, including some older ones that deserve a place in everyone’s portable gaming library. Nintendo itself isn’t really running any great discounts on Switch exclusives at the moment. Mario Odyssey and New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe are both $20 off, but everyone probably already has those. There are some notable…
If you’re hunting for Patagonia gear without paying full Patagonia prices, REI’s sale section is the place to be right now. This list pulls together the Patagonia items currently marked down—so you can stock up on winter layers, trail staples, and a few pieces for just lounging around. Editor’s pick Patagonia Jackson Glacier Down Parka – Men's — $298.83 (50% off) I wouldn’t mind rocking one of these right now in this snowstorm. Last week, I finally traveled to New York City to visit the Kotaku office, hang out with the people who work there, and even meet up with some former staff. It was a great time! Had a blast visiting the city, and getting there was a breeze. However, getting home was a mess and involved me crashing in the Detroit Metro Airport for seven hours before heading home to Kansas City. But it wasn’t all bad news. While in the airport, I found a strange vending machine that dispenses hot personal pizza pies. My wife and I landed in Detroit…
The next global volcanic disaster is more likely to come from volcanoes that appear dormant and are barely monitored than from the likes of famous volcanoes such as Etna in Sicily or Yellowstone in the US.Often overlooked, these “hidden” volcanoes erupt more often than most people realise. In regions like the Pacific, South America and Indonesia, an eruption from a volcano with no recorded history occurs every seven to ten years. And their effects can be unexpected and far-reaching.One volcano has just done exactly that. In November 2025, the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia has erupted for the first time…
As the holiday week winds to a close, some of us on the east coast of the United States are patiently awaiting a few inches of snow (and hopefully not rain). I’m probably not alone in looking forward to a quiet weekend in which I can hopefully carve out an hour or two of relaxing game time before the end-of-year parties and the race back to the grindstone in 2026. If you’re looking for recommendations of what to play, here’s what we at Kotaku are making time for this weekend. Cast n Chill Wombat Brawler Play it on: PC, Switch…
On a clear winter night, the sky can look like a blanket of stars, but it isn’t a blanket — it’s a map. Constellations are the signposts to the stars, simple stick-figures that turn a random scatter of points of light into something you can recognize, remember and navigate by. Learn just a handful, and the whole winter sky begins to fall into place.December is the ideal time to start stargazing in the Northern Hemisphere. Yes, it’s cold, but the long nights allow you to start early and give you hours of darkness, while the northern winter sky is packed…

Oh hey, it’s been a while since we did one of these. Actually, before we get to my favorite games of 2025, here were my favorite games of 2024 that I was so rudely not allowed to tell y’all about last year. Metaphor: ReFantazio Dragon Age: The Veilguard Mouthwashing Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure 1000xResist Shadow Generations Persona 3 Reload Astro Bot Marvel Rivals Life Is Strange: Double Exposure I tend to get pretty reflective when I write these end-of-year lists. My 2022 list was written mere days after I started here at Kotaku, and my 2023 one was put together…
Each week, Live Science highlights an interesting medical case report in its Diagnostic Dilemma series.
