A Pokémon store in Japan has figured out a novel way to fight off scalpers: It’s asking customers to pass a quiz before they’re allowed to buy Pokémon products. Dexerto spotted a post on X from Ryo Saeba that reported the store is asking people to answer a 15-question quiz before they can buy any of the trading card game cards. According to Saeba, this method is working—they claim scalpers are failing the tests, and so are unable to buy cards before genuine Pokémon fans are able to get their hands on them. The test is being carried out by a…

Your website is often the first thing a potential client sees before they ever speak to you. It needs to look sharp, load fast, and make it obvious what you do and who you do it for — all within a few seconds. The problem is that most multipurpose themes weren’t built with consulting businesses in mind. They don’t have the right page structures, trust signals, and starter content to get you up and running without a lot of customization. That’s why I spent time testing over 20 consulting themes, so I know which ones are fast, easy to set…
Researchers have demonstrated a breakthrough method for preventing errors in light-powered quantum computers before they even occur. The milestone, which was achieved using a new technique called photon distillation, means physicists are one step closer to developing light-based “photonic” quantum computers capable of achieving quantum advantage over classical supercomputers. In a study uploaded Jan. 9 to the arXiv preprint database, scientists detailed a “net-positive” method for mitigating errors in photonic quantum computers. You may like The research tackles what is arguably the biggest hurdle in the path to developing fault-tolerant universal quantum computers, the presence of noisy errors that can cause computations…
If you’re on your last life, you could consider purchasing a Super Mario coffin for your funeral. The (unofficial) tie-in went viral after a Brazilian manufacturer posted promo videos for the coffins, showing off Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Princess Peach themed designs. Each coffin is painted in the character’s distinctive color and emblazoned with their logo: the M and L hat symbols for Mario and Luigi, a mushroom for Toad, an egg for Yoshi, and a crown for Peach. Otherwise the coffins are ordinary and interchangeable with each other, featuring gold detailing and the conventional boxy shape. Brazilian urn and…
Food handling is an area of work that still relies heavily on humans. Fruit, vegetables, meat, and other foods need to be handled quickly but gently. It is also hard to automate because no two pieces of fruit, vegetables, or chicken nuggets look exactly the same.Eka’s demos suggest that the company may be onto something big. I found myself mentally comparing their robots to GPT-1, OpenAI’s first large language model, developed four years before ChatGPT. GPT-1 was often incoherent but showed glimmers of general linguistic intelligence. The robots I saw seem to have a similar kind of nascent physical intelligence. When…

Cats, on the other hand, waste approximately no time on the internet. Which species generally appears less stressed and anxious? Sure, this may not be the most scientific analysis about mental health and screen time, but it’s never a bad idea to try limiting the amount of idle time wasted in front of a computer or smartphone. And while there are plenty of apps and devices promising to reduce your social…
Soon you’ll be able to weep at the loss of your favorite operative at your very own table; XCOM is getting a tabletop game. Developer and publisher Firaxis announced the game as part of their 30th-anniversary celebration, which accompanied a brand refresh.Exact details for the XCOM board game are still under wraps. Modiphius Entertainment, also known for the Mass Effect board game and Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, is handling development. Like many other video game adaptations, the tabletop game will feature miniatures. In the announcement, Firaxis said the game will be inspired by XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the franchise reboot from…
Like the brand’s easy-to-assemble desks, the Align chair has a deceptive simplicity with relatively few parts. The chair required less than 15 minutes and only three screws to put together, using an Allen wrench that came in the box. (While the QR code, on a chair released in March, did not yet link up to the right URL for the assembly instructions, I mostly didn’t need them.)The simplicity stems mostly from the decision to limit the chair’s components: a cushion atop the wheels and casters and a single-piece mesh top held aloft by a suspension system that allows for a…

Fans of the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards crowned Alison Tuck the winner of the Sterna People’s Choice Award. Tuck’s hilarious photo (seen above) captures the relatable frustration of a gannet on a windy day. “My gannet image was taken on a very breezy day in Yorkshire on the Bempton Cliffs,” Tuck explained in a statement. “I love taking lots of photos especially of wildlife, from a tiny ant to a large elephant on land, a small crab to an…
