Two days before the Musk v. Altman trial began, Elon Musk asked OpenAI cofounder and president Greg Brockman about reaching a settlement. When Brockman suggested both sides drop their claims, Musk responded, “By the end of this week, you and Sam [Altman] will be the most hated men in America. If you insist, so be it.”The message—which OpenAI’s lawyers made public on Sunday, and which Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers subsequently refused to let the jury hear about—underscores what may be Musk’s larger goal in this trial. He appears to be trying to not only win over the jurors to potentially…
There’s a lot of talk about Grand Theft Auto VI at IICON, the new executive-focused video game conference in Las Vegas being put on by the Entertainment Software Association. Most of that talk is understandably coming from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, or from other gaming executives. But it’s also coming from, apparently, Bank of America, with a stock analyst for the bank declaring, after speaking to attendees at IICON, that GTA 6 should and will cost $80, so that other AAA companies don’t have trouble selling their own games. This comes from Bank of America stock analyst Omar Dessouky, who…
To say something moves at a glacial pace is to imply sluggish, unhurried change. But what transpired over the course of 15 months at Antarctica’s Hektoria Glacier was uncharacteristically quick. Between January 2022 and March 2023, the glacier lost about 25 kilometers (15 miles) in length. That included a two-month period in which the terminus retreated more than 8 kilometers (5 miles)—the highest rate of grounded glacial ice loss observed in modern history. A team of scientists published an analysis of Hektoria’s collapse based on a suite of remote-sensing data, finding that its particular geometry enabled the rapid change. Like…
As its name implies, the venerable Notepad++ text editor began as a more capable version of the classic Windows Notepad, with features such as line numbering and syntax highlighting. It was created in 2003 by Don Ho, who continues to be its primary author and maintainer, and it has been a Windows-exclusive app throughout its existence (older Notepad++ versions support OSes as old as Windows 95; the current version officially supports everything going back to Windows 7). I’m not a devoted user of the app, but I was aware of its history, which is why I was surprised to see…
Alexanderstock23/Shutterstock The New York Times reports that the White House may create a new working group to oversee AI development. A federal review of new AI models ahead of their public release is being considered as a possible power for that committee, according to the publication’s sources. No clear approach has been decided, but the Times suggested it could mimic what’s currently happening within the UK government, where multiple layers of oversight confirm that AI models meet safety standards. (Although the UK has recently been having its own drama about AI…
Two scalping stories in one day. Such are the times we live in. First, it was Pokémon Pop-Tarts. Now it’s Valve’s new Steam Controller. The company’s first new peripheral in years sold out in less than an hour and people are already trying to hawk them for as much as $400 on eBay. That’s up to three times the original asking price, which at $100 already made the Steam Controller noticeably more expensive than a PS5 DualSense or Xbox Series X/S controller. But lots of Steam users still wanted one, which isn’t surprising given the impressive functionality and trackpad haptics for…
Ireland signed the Artemis Accords Monday during a signing ceremony hosted by NASA, becoming the latest nation to commit to the responsible exploration of space for all humanity. Ireland, a longstanding member of ESA (European Space Agency) and a valued international partner for NASA, now joins all 23 ESA member states as a signatory of the Artemis Accords. “It is my privilege to welcome Ireland as the 66th and newest signatory to the Artemis Accords,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman during remarks. “The Emerald Isle is now part of a growing community of like-minded nations committed to the peaceful, transparent,…
Sony, owner of the PlayStation brand, has been accused of antitrust practices. The lawsuit was originally settled in 2024 but was rejected twice during the approval process. Last week, a judge approved a preliminary reopening of the settlement. The suit, brought before the San Francisco division of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses the company of allegedly limiting third-party retailers from selling PlayStation titles via “game-specific vouchers.” That means preventing customers from buying games elsewhere and forcing them to make digital purchases solely on Sony’s PlayStation Network, where it controls prices without worrying about competitors. The…
Elon Musk Settles With The SEC For $1.5 Million After Years-Long Dispute Over His Twitter Investment
Benjamin Fanjoy/Getty Images Elon Musk has reached a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after a years-long dispute with the regulator over the timing of his disclosure that he had acquired a significant stake in Twitter. Musk agreed to pay a $1.5 million fee without admitting wrongdoing in exchange for the SEC dropping its case, the regulator said. If the settlement is approved by a court, it will bring to an end the drawn out battle over how he began his $44 billion takeover of Twitter in 2022.…
Call of Duty players have been waiting for the franchise to leave last-gen consoles behind for quite some time. The versions on PS4 and Xbox One don’t run well, and there’s a perennial feeling that old hardware is holding the annualized blockbuster shooter series back in some way. Well, those players have finally gotten their wish. Activision shot down recent rumors that this year’s Call of Duty, rumored to be Modern Warfare 4, might appear on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true,” the series’ social media account posted on X on…
