Our warming world is set to enter an El Niño period as early as May, with a high likelihood of southern North America experiencing supercharged temperatures. One of the three phases of the natural El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle in the Pacific Ocean, El Niño events occur every two to seven years, driving up sea surface temperatures across the Pacific Ocean and increasing global temperature. The last El Niño partially explains why 2024 was the hottest year on record. The knock-on effects of past El Niño events have been profound, with studies linking them to famine in Europe; civil wars in tropical…

Industria 2‘s announcement back in 2024 excited a small but passionate group of fans who enjoyed the original game, an atmospheric shooter set in an alternate Cold War East Germany. The trailer looked like “Half-Life and SOMA” had a baby, one player wrote. This week, the game finally came out on Steam, and no one’s happy, including the team behind the sequel, Bleakmill. “It hurts to be sitting at 48 percent positive ratings after putting all our hearts and souls into this game over 4 years,” the creators of the game posted on X. “So much struggle, joy and difficulties…

Publicly released exploit code for an effectively unpatched vulnerability that gives root access to virtually all releases of Linux is setting off alarm bells as defenders scramble to ward off severe compromises inside data centers and on personal devices. The vulnerability and exploit code that exploits it were released Wednesday evening by researchers from security firm Theori, five weeks after privately disclosing it to the Linux kernel security team. The AI industry’s demand for memory, storage and powerful chips has finally come for the Mac mini. Apple has stopped selling its cheapest $599 model of the Mac mini, based on changes to the company’s store page spotted by MacRumors. Only configurations that come with at least 512GB of storage and up are available, which means the Mac mini now effectively starts at $799. The tiny desktop’s popular use as a home for local AI agents likely played a part in the change. Engadget has contacted Apple for confirmation that it’s discontinuing the entry-level Mac…

Earth’s magnetic field is like a powerful trap. It lures electrically charged particles in space, near our planet, and snares them in an invisible, doughnut-shaped pen around Earth known as the ring current. This captive swarm of charged particles plays an important role in how Earth reacts to changing conditions in space, called space weather, which can affect the technology we rely on, such as satellites and power grids. Yet there is still a lot we do not know about the ring current. NASA is preparing to launch a mission designed to provide a unique, inside-out view of the ring current. Called STORIE…

There’s a gorgeous new pixely Metroidvania on the way next year that I now have my eye on. It’s called City of None, and it’s made by one of the co-creators of Celeste, and published under the same studio label. Look at thiiiiiis (h/t Rock Paper Shotgun): I love this style of pixel art, that invokes Game Boy vibes but is still clearly modern and taking advantage of better hardware to support intricate detail. The teaser soundtrack is also really good, and there are some other tracks available on the game’s official website that I think are fantastic too, especially “Among…

Many indoor hydroponic garden systems are striking showpieces for the home, but none perhaps more so than Lettuce Grow’s Farmstand.Founded by Zooey Deschanel and her ex-husband, film producer Jacob Pechenik, Lettuce Grow makes a variety of gardens, including the new no-pump-required Counterstand Set ($149), which I’m currently testing. Nothing stops guests in their tracks quite like the indoor Farmstand. As I described it when I reviewed it last year, it’s as if a giant strawberry planter were reimagined as a set piece for 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Farmstand’s smaller sibling, the Nook, recently began selling at Costco and immediately…

Mechanism, the company behind a “gaming pillow” for the Steam Deck and a growing list of grips for handheld consoles and PCs, already has its first Steam Controller accessory ready. The Basegrip for Steam Controller is contoured to fit snuggly over the back of the controller while leaving room…

Another Week, Another Nightmare 2026 won’t quit, and is poised to ruin yet another weekend by forcing sysadmins to patch their systems.  As we mentioned in the podcast the cPanel and WHM bugs are bad enough that some hosting companies have blocked ports 2083 and 2087 until patches are installed and verified on their customers sites.  We are not sure when these exploits were first discovered and leveraged but attacks have been uncovered dating all the way back to February of this year.  This news is not going to make anyone who owns one of the roughly 1.5 million cPanel…

Technicians at NASA’s Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility (PHSF) at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida offloaded eight high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) wall modules and other ground support equipment on April 27. The equipment will support launch processing of the agency’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Each 1,800-pound module enhances the PHSF’s clean room systems, helping meet the telescope’s stringent cleanliness requirements during its time in the facility, where the observatory will undergo key tasks such as spacecraft fueling prior to liftoff. Roman will observe the universe in infrared light using its Wide Field Instrument and a Coronagraph Instrument technology demonstration. Its…
