Evaporated Steam Valve’s Steam Machine was poised to expand on the Steam Deck’s success, but it’s currently in limbo, and the Deck is, too. Credit: Valve Valve’s Steam Machine was poised to expand on the Steam Deck’s success, but it’s currently in limbo, and the Deck is, too. Credit: Valve But Valve’s push to compete directly with Microsoft and PC hardware makers has hit a wall, at least for now: huge cost increases and supply increases for all kinds of PC components, particularly memory and storage chips. It’s been 250 years since the United States decided it was no longer interested in being part of Great Britain. To celebrate the momentous anniversary—called a semiquincentennial—the non-profit America250 has numerous events planned including something quite timely. A roughly 2,000-pound time capsule will be buried at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park on July 4, 2026. The capsule is intended to safeguard a snapshot of America today for another 250 years. While the process of burying random items underground for a few centuries might sound…
Would you believe me if I said Kotaku didn’t originally intend for a ranking of the best SpongeBob Squarepants episodes to line up with the series’ 27th anniversary? It’s true! We were literally just talking about putting one together yesterday without realizing that today, May 1, marks 27 years since the animated comedy first debuted on Nickelodeon. It’s kind of sad to say that SpongeBob Squarepants has been living in mediocrity for longer than it was good, as most would readily admit the show declined heavily in quality after its third season when original showrunner Stephen Hillenburg stepped down from…

Credit: Ibrahim et al / Nature Both the “warmer” and original versions of each model were then run through prompts from HuggingFace datasets designed to have “objective variable answers,” and in which “inaccurate answers can pose real-world risks.” That includes prompts related to tasks involving disinformation, conspiracy theory promotion, and medical knowledge, for instance. Across hundreds of these…

Earlier this week, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a human trial for a blueberry-sized brain implant intended to target treatment-resistant depression. The brain-computer interface (BCI) developed by Houston-based startup Motif Neurotech aims to deliver electrical stimulation to activate parts of the brain’s central executive network that are inactive in people with major depressive disorder. If successful, it would make this the first example of a BCI used to treat clinical depression. “The goal for this technology is that it would…
Exploding demon flesh, bullet hell ballets, farm-to-table RPG combat—whatever you’re in the mood to play, one of the games below is bound to hit the spot. Here are the games we recommend you check out, and which we personally can’t wait to get back to playing this weekend. Saros © Housemarque / Kotaku Play it on: PS5 I’ve played through Saros twice already and I yearn for more. Alzheimer’s research is entering a new phase, as treatments that have taken decades to develop begin to reach patients. But getting those advances to people will depend on more than scientific progress alone, according to pioneering Alzheimer’s researcher John Hardy.Speaking at WIRED Health in April, Hardy, chair of the Molecular Biology of Neurological Disease at University College London, said that alongside more effective drugs, better diagnosis and political will were still needed to improve treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. “We’ve got to get better,” he said.Hardy was instrumental in identifying the central role of amyloid, a form of protein found in…

After careful deliberation by a brilliant group of students, Jackie and Shadow’s new eaglets have names. Chick 1 will henceforth be known as Sandy and chick 2 is Luna. According to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), Sandy was the most popular name entered with 3706 of the 63,915 names submitted. Sandy is in homage for FOBBV’s former director Sandy Steers who died in February. “Please know that although Sandy would not have wanted us to outright name one of the eaglets Sandy, she…
Last Flag, a newly released CTF-like online-only competitive multiplayer shooter from the game studio co-created by the lead singer of Imagine Dragons and his brother, isn’t going to get any new content past an already planned update, as the devs admit it failed to find an audience on Steam. The shooter is the latest example of an online game failing to find an audience, despite the star power attached to it. Last Flag launched on April 14 and was developed by Night Street Games, a studio founded in 2020 by Imagine Dragons lead singer (and amateur game dev) Dan Reynolds…
