People are still reeling from Disney’s mass layoffs last month, including Ant-Man‘s Evangeline Lilly. The Marvel actor who played the Wasp opposite Paul Rudd recently put out an Instagram video blasting the cuts and suggesting that the threat of generative AI looms large over the unexpected downsizing of Marvel’s visual development team. “I reached out to my good friend Andy Park, who was the genius behind creating the original Wasp super-suit and the original Wasp concept drawings for the film Ant-Man and the Wasp, and just said, ‘Is this true? Is this really what’s happening?’” she said in a video posted…

Amazon’s cloud customers will need to wait several more months before the US tech company can repair war-damaged data centers and restore normal operations in the Middle East. The announcement comes two months after Iranian drone strikes targeted three Amazon data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain—meaning that full recovery from the cloud disruption could take nearly half a year in all. The Amazon Web Services (AWS) dashboard posted an April 30 update describing how its UAE and Bahrain cloud regions “suffered damage as a result of the conflict in the Middle East” and are unable to support…

“Today, we led the nation protecting women, children, and everyone in public life from the harm caused by AI nudification technology,” Maye Quade said. “Companies that make this technology available for free online and in app stores will no longer be allowed to enable predators who abuse and victimize adults and children with the click of a button.” Celebrating the law’s passage, Maye Quade thanked “the victim-survivors who made this bill a reality.” “They have shared their story in committee, with reporters, and with law enforcement with dignity and courage,” she said. “Their power, brilliance, and advocacy is why we…

Another media outlet is retreating from gaming. The A.V. Club has laid off its full-time gaming editors as it refocuses its resources on its “core strengths” of movies and TV. It’s the latest casualty of Paste Media ownership repeatedly fumbling the ball. “We regret The A.V. Club couldn’t be a home to expanded video games coverage once again,” the company wrote in a statement. Paste Media, originally organized around a print music magazine, went online-only in 2010 and expanded into video games with the Paste Games vertical. After several brief tours by different editors, including Kotaku alumnus Kirk Hamilton, it…

They can dive 1,300 to 4,000 feet-deep and also travel as much as 15,000 miles per year. These depths and distances make sperm whales and other whale species particularly difficult for scientists to follow and study.  A new autonomous underwater glider system aims to make that trek a little easier. The glider from Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), detailed in a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, follows sperm whale vocalizations without getting in their way. AI…

Indie horror game Amygdala: Prelude is, according to its developer, about 80 percent of the way done and ready for early access. Its developers have set up a Steam store page and are ready and eager to push it live. There’s just one problem: their game has yet to be approved by Valve, and it’s allegedly been waiting for that approval for three whole years.
