The last thing you want at a theme park, besides long lines and 98 degree weather with 100 percent humidity, is a power outage. Unfortunately for attendees at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, that’s exactly what they got. On May 16th, the Six Flags park experienced what a spokesperson described as “technical issues” attributed to high winds. No injuries were reported, but the outage decommissioned the entire park for the day including several rides, with at least one roller coaster halted mid-ride. The stopped coaster was fortunately not stuck in one of those awkward upside-down positions, but riders did…

How many times do you think you check your phone a day?The number is probably much higher than you’d guess. Phones are always within easy reach, offering instant access to the world, social media, and messages from friends and family. Even if you’re not being pinged with notifications, the temptation to scroll through an app or two is always there. There are different ways to tackle this, from muting notifications to keeping some space between you and your device. But one easy way to be sure you check your phone less often is to do more with the lock screen on…
I’ve recently taken up having a drunken cigarette every now and then. And before you say anything, I know it’s bad for me! Despite what it sounds like, the move is hardly recreational. It’s more a twisted form of therapy, one that works best (or worst) when compounded with the poison already coursing through my veins by the time I’ve lit up. To me, the cigarette is a crude implement, but it’s my chosen weapon these days for beating back the dread. I embrace the nicotine wave, allowing it to crash over and soothe me, prolonging the vibe of my…
Paying an absurd monthly bill is never fun, but many of us have been there. Quiet hikes, surcharges, and extra services you don’t really need can make reviewing your monthly bill a true nightmare. Prepaid carriers have historically been viewed as an affordable, but in many ways, inferior alternative, with unstable coverage and slow data speeds. The perception has shifted dramatically over the past few years, and prepaid carriers are steadily becoming the new staple for how simple reviewing your monthly bill can be. But which one to choose? Monitor your bill quickly through the Metro app. | Image by PhoneArena With…
We do know that Booz Allen Hamilton is making much more money than it originally projected. In the contract, the company estimated that it would make $87 million in the first five years, and a total of about $182 million over 10 years if the contract was extended, which it has been.According to their invoices, Booz Allen Hamilton billed for more than $140 million in the first four years of the contract. The Forest Service didn’t return our FOIA request for more recent numbers, but one analyst, Canadian sales strategist Blair Enns, projected that they could make $620 million by…
Overnight Nintendo revealed a brand new mobile game called Pictonico!, which says it will take your photos and turn them into minigames. Looking like it falls somewhere between WarioWare and Project Rub, this completely doolally game wants you to take photos of yourself and friends, and then puts your face into ridiculous challenges, and it all looks pleasingly bonkers. Due out on May 28, the official site for Pictonico! rather awkwardly declares, “Your photos now a game!” Boasting 80 different minigames, they all seem to be based around portrait photographs either being cut out and placed into silly situations, or the photo itself being…
– or maybe all three telcos’ – equipment on it.Some will welcome it, some will not. More often than not, that second group won’t just murmur but will take decisive actions to protest. This very scenario is playing out once again in Pittsburgh. But this time, it’s just about radiation fears.Serious worries Can you blame the locals? | Image by Unsplash Residents in several Pittsburgh-area communities are pushing back against proposed cellphone towers near schools and athletic fields. They say the structures could create safety risks and potential health concerns. In Jefferson Hills, for example, locals have spent years opposing a planned…
“Coils by nature solve a problem, which is how do you keep a space clean and tidy, that has a variable length between two things,” says Steven Harton, senior product manager at Herman Miller. He says the design choice was inspired by the coiled cables on vintage tech like telephone handsets and early mechanical keyboards. The result is fun and orderly. Finally, there’s the rotary dial. This is the height adjustment mechanism on the Coyl desk. Rather than using traditional paddles or levers to make the desk go up or down, Herman Miller employs a dial that feels like something you’d…
