We have an idea of what the solar system’s past was like: It was violent and chaotic. However, we are still studying how violent it was. Current models suggest that at some point after their formation, the giant planets went through a phase of such extreme instability that one or even two bodies the size of Uranus or Neptune were ejected into interstellar space. If that scenario occurred, we may find clues in the most unexpected places in the solar system, such as the moons of Jupiter and, especially, those of Uranus.A recent article published in Icarus analyzed 122 possible…

Fumito Ueda, the creator of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, returned to Summer Game Fest with his previously-hinted-at Project Robot, now renamed Gen Atlas. And the brief showing of in-game footage looks as beautiful as you’d hope, as we fly around what appear to be the ruined remains of a vast robot. Fumito Ueda appeared at the Summer Game Fest event, albeit silently from the audience, before footage from what we now know is called Gen Atlas was shown, eliciting gasps from the crowd and the Kotaku Slack. Because it’s an Ueda-san game, it’s obviously about a small guy in an…

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced his administration’s latest attempt to prop up the US coal industry during an incoherent press event that randomly oscillated between energy issues and Trump’s fixation with building and renovating monuments in DC. The energy portion of the events was also frequently disconnected from reality. “Today we’re taking historic action to bring down the price of energy and the cost of living for all Americans with the power of clean, beautiful coal,” said Trump, apparently unaware that coal is one of the most expensive means of generating electricity in the US. With wind and solar…

Crossfire, announced today at Summer Game Fest’s big opening event, is a new third-person narrative-driven shooter that the devs hope will completely change how cover-based shooters play. After seeing the game earlier this month, I think it very well could. The bigger problem might be getting people to notice what Crossfire is doing differently. This is the first game from That’s No Moon, a studio created in 2021 by a team of veteran devs who have worked on God of War, Call of Duty, and The Last of Us. And yes, if the name Crossfire sounds familiar, that’s because this…

My hopes were high for the new Prime Video superhero series Spider-Noir, based on all those amazing trailers. But I also had some trepidation. Could the actual series live up to the hype? As it turns out, yes, it could. Spider-Noir is a triumph, fusing fast-paced storytelling, compelling characters, gorgeous cinematography and production design, and whip-smart dialogue into a hugely entertaining, loving homage to a magical bygone era. (Some spoilers below, but no major reveals.) Marvel Comics created its “noir” line in 2009, reinterpreting familiar Marvel characters in an alternate universe, usually set during the Great Depression in the US.…

Although reports indicate—and Adams said was the case in Utah—that communities have genuine concerns fueling the rise in opposition, not everyone agrees that the immense community backlash in the US is rational or proportionate. On Bluesky, Will Stancil, a lawyer, activist, and housing policy researcher, commented on HeatMap’s poll, suggesting it seemed unusual for public opinion to shift so quickly without “some major data center disaster.” In his thread, Stancil boosted a reply suggesting that data center backlash “hit the algo,” raising a theory that social media is possibly driving anti-data center sentiment. And while O’Leary blamed himself and Adams for…

We’re getting a new Gundam game and it’s not far away. Revealed at the Summer Game Fest showcase, Gundam Rogue Orbit is the latest adaptation of the hit anime from Bandai Namco and it’s coming out in 2027. The trailer was so neat I almost confused it for a new Armored Core game. Hopefully we’ll get one of those too. For now, here’s our first look at Orbit:   The game is headed to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, though we don’t yet know if it’s primarily a single-player adventure or an online game like some of the…
