Altman and Brockman were not present when the verdict came in, the NYT reported. However, there were “a few smiles from the OpenAI side of the room,” with OpenAI attorney William Savitt wearing “a wide grin,” the NYT reported. Savitt spent days grilling Musk on the stand, seemingly taking advantage of his prior experience as Musk’s lawyer to get under Musk’s skin. In a statement, Microsoft celebrated the win, writing, “The facts and the timeline in this case have long been clear, and we welcome the jury’s decision to dismiss these claims as untimely. We remain committed to our work…

On Saturday, I went to the Music of Square Enix orchestra concert in Seattle as a capper on an extremely good week-long vacation. The concert was pretty good, and it was mainly because they played “Megalomania” from Live A Live as the capper to the first half of it, and also because I got to get pretend-mad that there was no Final Fantasy 6 music involved. The concert took place at Benaroya Hall and was conducted by Eric Roth, and here’s where I’m going to get a little bit symphony-snobby: my mom is a professional musician who is in a…

“We were a relatively loud voice on MSR, because we just saw a program and a capability that could be solved,” Beck said in his recent interview with Ars. “The cost estimates for MSR, and all the rest of it, was just nuts. I think anybody knows that I have a bit of a soft spot for planetary sciences. So with MSR, I just saw a whole bunch of Nobel Prizes sitting on the surface there, and it was just criminal not to bring them home. As part of that, we studied the whole architecture very, very, very closely, and…

Rocky, barren land? Exhausted individuals standing in long lines for humanitarian aid? The injured, the sick? The dead?   Or could you imagine a different Palestine, one with lush gardens and flowering trees? Could there be colorful handmade crafts? Plates of delicious food? Clear rushing water? What about community; what about neighborhoods and towns where people gather cheerfully for meals, celebrations, or just because?  …

A thousand years ago, the ancestors of today’s Barkindji people carefully buried a dingo (or garli, in the Barkindji language) in a mound of shells. Archaeologists recently studied the burial in what’s now New South Wales, Australia. They found that the Barkindji ancestors had buried the dingo with the same care and ceremony as any beloved human member of the community and looked after the grave for centuries. The burial reveals that dingoes were, as Australian Museum and University of Sydney archaeologist and study co-author Amy Way puts it, “deeply valued and loved” by ancient people in Australia. The long-lost…

BMW M’s next major work will be next year’s all-electric quad-motor M3, derived from the Neue Klasse i3. And we can’t imagine there’s a three-pedal version of that one in the works, sadly. The M3 I really want In BMW’s briefing materials for the M3 CS Handschalter, it notes that the 3.0 L S58 engine is also used, in modified form, in the BMW M4 GT3 Evo that won the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year. BMW has had a fair degree of success with the M4 GT3 Evo, as it also won last year’s Nurbürgring 24, among other races.…
