In January, the European Commission began an initial investigation, known as a specification proceeding, into how Google has implemented AI in the Android operating system. The results are in, and the EU says Android needs to be more open, which is not surprising. Meanwhile, Google says this amounts to “unwarranted intervention,” which is equally unsurprising. Regardless of Google’s characterization of the investigation, the commission may force Google to make Android AI changes this summer. This action stems from the continent’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), a sweeping law that designates seven dominant technology companies as “gatekeepers” that are subject to greater…

You’re striding confidently down what seems to be a clear, open path, and then you feel it. Stretchy filaments dragging across your skin, your clothes—even worse, your face. The more you try to backtrack and flail your way out of it the more you feel like Frodo wrapped in Shelob the spider’s deadly web, your luckier friends snickering like orcs ready to take you back to Mordor.  Long story short, walking through a spiderweb is awful. However, according to…

Will 2007’s Assassin’s Creed be Ubisoft’s next remake? A report claims 93 percent of crypto games have failed, which doesn’t sound high enough. And when will People Can Fly release a new game? It’s Morning Checkpoint for April 27, 2026, where I’m trying to have as much fun as the headline writers at the New York Post. I hate plushies. They sit around, collect dust, and fade in the sunlight. I might have to make an exception for Robo from Chrono Trigger, though. Live-action adaptations of games are neat but no longer necessary Expedition 33’s Ben Starr says that video…

Now, it’s looking more like late 2027, at the earliest, for Artemis III. “I’ve received responses from both vendors, both SpaceX and Blue Origin, to meet our needs for a late 2027 rendezvous, docking, and test of the interoperability of both landers in advance of a landing attempt in 2028,” Isaacman said Monday. Both companies have multibillion-dollar contracts to develop and deliver human-rated landers to NASA for use on Artemis missions. Both vehicles need to be refueled in space in order to fly to the Moon. This added complexity is not required for an Earth orbit mission. “The taxpayers are…

The newest residents of the internet’s favorite eagle nest are rapidly growing right before our eyes. Nearly one month after hatching, Jackie and Shadow’s two to-be-named chicks are beginning to put more on thermal fur. This extra warmth was certainly helpful, after a snowstorm covered their nest in snow over the weekend. What a difference three weeks makes. Image: Friends of Big Bear Valley. According to nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the chicks are also growing their first juvenile pin feathers. These…

When Valve sent me a Steam Controller earlier this month ahead of its release on May 4, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The original Steam Controller, released back in 2015, was an interesting experiment, but not a controller I’d ever use daily. And the new, upcoming Steam Controller looked a bit less weird, but still not quite like most gamepads out there. Plus, there was a tiny little puck that you connected to your computer that also charged it. That seemed neat, but potentially finicky. But after using the Steam Controller and its tiny little puck for a few…

A jury was selected on Monday during the first day of trial for Musk v. Altman in a federal court in Oakland, California. Some of the jurors that were ultimately selected voiced concerns over Musk himself, as well as the AI technology at the core of the case, but assured the court they would put these concerns aside for the trial. The kick off also catalyzed an array of shenanigans outside the courtroom.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman were spotted in the security line inside the courthouse this morning, but Elon Musk was nowhere to be found. A…

The average male Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) is about 10-feet-long and weighs around 1,200 pounds. But Chonkers is no average sea lion. At an estimated 2,000 pounds , the absurdly humongous, Redditor-nicknamed marine mammal has captivated onlookers and imposed himself on his fellow sunbathers ever since he arrived at San Francisco’s Pier 39 in early April. Sea lions routinely visit the Bay Area for its vast sources of fish, as well as the chance to simply hang out together. These gatherings are part…

Since Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, the exclusive partnership between the two firms has been one of the strongest and most consequential in the AI industry. Today, though, OpenAI and Microsoft jointly announced an amended agreement that will allow the company to go beyond Microsoft’s Azure and “serve all its products to customers across any cloud provider.” The announcement clarifies that Microsoft will continue to have a license for OpenAI’s IP and models through 2032 and that Azure will remain the “primary cloud partner” for OpenAI during that time (should Microsoft continue to be able to honor…
