When Valve sent me a Steam Controller earlier this month ahead of its release on May 4, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The original Steam Controller, released back in 2015, was an interesting experiment, but not a controller I’d ever use daily. And the new, upcoming Steam Controller looked a bit less weird, but still not quite like most gamepads out there. Plus, there was a tiny little puck that you connected to your computer that also charged it. That seemed neat, but potentially finicky. But after using the Steam Controller and its tiny little puck for a few…

Since Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, the exclusive partnership between the two firms has been one of the strongest and most consequential in the AI industry. Today, though, OpenAI and Microsoft jointly announced an amended agreement that will allow the company to go beyond Microsoft’s Azure and “serve all its products to customers across any cloud provider.” The announcement clarifies that Microsoft will continue to have a license for OpenAI’s IP and models through 2032 and that Azure will remain the “primary cloud partner” for OpenAI during that time (should Microsoft continue to be able to honor…

Daunting—but not impossible. One way to help prepare for our imminent arrival is to gain a better understanding of the frequency and effects of meteorite strikes on the lunar surface. NASA isn’t only relying on its brave squadron of astronauts like the recently returned Artemis II crew to do the work, however. They need help from anyone willing to spend some time gazing up at the moon from here on Earth. For…

One idea given for the mysterious disappearance of Neanderthals around 40,000 years ago is a difference in brain power compared with early modern humans (Homo sapiens), who invaded their territory in Eurasia and outcompeted them.
