Websites for some of the world’s most prestigious universities are serving explicit porn and malicious content after scammers exploited the shoddy record-keeping of the site administrators, a researcher found recently. The sites included berkeley.edu, columbia.edu, and washu.edu, the official domains for the University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Subdomains such as hXXps://causal.stat.berkeley.edu/ymy/video/xxx-porn-girl-and-boy-ej5210.html, hXXps://conversion-dev.svc.cul.columbia[.]edu/brazzers-gym-porn, and hXXps://provost.washu.edu/app/uploads/formidable/6/dmkcsex-10.pdf. All deliver explicit pornography and, in at least one case, a scam site falsely claiming a visitor’s computer is infected and advising the visitor to pay a fee for the non-existent malware to be removed. In all, researcher Alex…

Vampire Crawlers, the new card-based, first-person spin-off of mega-hit Vampire Survivors, is an absolutely stunning game. We’ve already made that very clear. It’s also a game that’s so jam-packed with lovely little details that deserve to be individually celebrated. The sheer delight of Crawlers is how entirely different it is as a game from Survivors, and yet how much they have in common. One is a top-down auto-battler roguelite with bullet-hell DNA, the other is a first-person dungeon crawling deck-builder. It’s bonkers that they feel so closely associated, and its testament to both Survivors creators Poncle and Crawlers developers Nosebleed that the relationship…

This week’s science news followed last week’s climactic splashdown of the Artemis II mission with a flurry of space and physics news that only further melted our minds.Topping the list was the first-ever observation by scientists of singularities in combined light and sound waves that moved faster than the speed of light, and the microscope technique that found it has the potential to reveal hidden processes in physics, chemistry and biology. And in another first for microscopic measurements, scientists observed quantum entanglement between two moving atoms, opening up an avenue to search for a theory of everything. If the inhumanly small…

The Federal Communications Commission clarified this week that its sweeping ban on foreign-made consumer routers also affects portable hotspot devices. The FCC added a new section to an FAQ titled, “Is my device a consumer-grade router under the National Security Determination?” The new FAQ section says this category includes “consumer-grade portable or mobile MiFi Wi-Fi or hotspot devices for residential use.” The ban does not cover “mobile phones with hotspot features,” the FAQ says. This means that companies making consumer hotspots need an exemption from the government to import and sell any future hotspots that haven’t previously been approved by…

Humans migrated to South America in three distinct waves over the course of thousands of years, a new large-scale analysis of Indigenous Americans’ DNA reveals.
